Why Do My Product-Ad Voice and Sound-Effect Tracks Lose Alignment After Truncate Silence?

Check whether Truncate Silence processed selected tracks independently. When independent processing is enabled, different amounts of silence can be removed from each track, breaking their alignment. When disabled, removal occurs only where all selected tracks are silent simultaneously.

01 / WHY DO MY PRODUCT-AD VOICE AND SOUND-EFFECT TRACKS LOSE ALIGNMENT AFTER TRUNCATE SILENCE?

Understand What Counts as Silence

Version scope: the current web manual confirms shared versus independent selected-track processing. The additional Sync-Locked-group, label and fade details below come from the cited Development Manual. Those details are not claimed as tested behavior in every release; identify the actual installed version and its controls.

Audacity's Truncate Silence identifies audio below a specified threshold for at least the configured minimum duration. Silence therefore means audio meeting these detection conditions, not necessarily a completely empty waveform.

A quiet breath, low-level ambience, or soft product sound may fall below the threshold. The effect does not establish that background noise has been cleaned or removed.

Before processing, identify which tracks must maintain their timing relationship. Narration and synchronized sound effects usually need different handling from unrelated language recordings.

This behavior is described in the Audacity Development Manual dated September 2, 2026. The documentation is not evidence of testing across every stable Audacity release.

02 / WHY DO MY PRODUCT-AD VOICE AND SOUND-EFFECT TRACKS LOSE ALIGNMENT AFTER TRUNCATE SILENCE?

Choose Independent or Shared Truncation

With independent track processing disabled, Audacity truncates only time regions where all selected tracks meet the silence conditions. This preserves the relative timing of those selected tracks.

With independent processing enabled, each selected track can lose different regions and durations. A sound effect originally aligned with a spoken product claim may consequently occur at the wrong moment.

Sync-Locked groups introduce another consideration. The cited Development Manual says unselected audio tracks in the group have the corresponding sections removed whether those sections are silent or audible. When truncating tracks independently, only one audio track in each Sync-Locked group can be selected. That selection restriction does not protect the other group members from corresponding time removal.

Decision branch: Keep related voice and effects aligned through shared processing. Process unrelated language versions separately when their timing does not need to match. Inspect Sync-Locked membership before either operation.

The Development Manual's Truncate Silence page gives the Sync-Locked-group and independent-selection restrictions.

The current Truncate Silence manual also explains why related selected tracks should use shared processing.

Illustrative Exercise: Two Audio Arrangements

Illustrative exercise — hypothetical inputs, not executed Audacity tests. A contains voiceover and product effects that must remain aligned. B contains separate English and Japanese deliverables with no matching-timestamp requirement.

On a working copy, evaluate shared truncation for A. For B, first inspect Sync-Locked membership and the single-selected-audio-track restriction before considering independent processing. Record the actual removed regions and check every affected track; an unselected group member may contain audible material at those times.

04 / WHY DO MY PRODUCT-AD VOICE AND SOUND-EFFECT TRACKS LOSE ALIGNMENT AFTER TRUNCATE SILENCE?

Check Labels, Fades, and Video Timing

The Development Manual says labels in selected or Sync-Lock-selected label tracks can be truncated, deleted or moved back. Check which label tracks are affected, then review product-claim markers, edit points and delivery boundaries after processing.

The effect can also remove quiet portions of fades. When appropriate, truncate before constructing final fades rather than assuming existing fades will remain intact.

Review the shortened audio against the advertisement video afterward. Preserving alignment among audio tracks does not automatically preserve synchronization with an unchanged video timeline.

Confirm spoken words, sound-effect timing, labels, and final duration before delivery. This is an audio-editing synchronization issue, not a diagnosis of variable-frame-rate phone footage.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does disabling independent truncation guarantee that no spoken words will be removed?

No. It preserves shared timing among selected tracks, but threshold and minimum-duration settings can still classify quiet speech as silence. Sync-Locked groups also require separate inspection.

Should I truncate silence before or after creating final fades?

The Development Manual notes that quiet fade portions can be removed. Truncating first and creating final fades afterward can avoid that particular problem.
