Should Every Bing AI Opportunity Query Become a New Product Guide?

No. Bing’s Topics Portfolio beta offers site-specific planning signals, not a ready-made article quota. Its opportunity list can include another brand’s queries, approximate citation ranges and imperfect topic classifications. Check whether a question belongs to your product and adds useful information before commissioning a page.

Know which signal the report supplies

Microsoft announced Topics Portfolio on 13 October 2026. The report organizes grounding-query presence into topics and shows opportunities where other sites appear but yours does not. Its availability depends on sufficient data. A missing tab is not, by itself, evidence that a particular guide has been rejected.

Read Topic Size as the approximate total citations across all sites in that topic during the selected period. It is separate from your own citations and is not traditional keyword search volume, site traffic or a count of shoppers. Opportunity-query citation volumes are ranges rather than exact counts; use them as directional planning context.

Check the metric definitions and beta limitations in Microsoft's Topics Portfolio announcement.

Apply a product-fit filter before a traffic filter

For each candidate, ask which real merchant task it represents and whether your organization can answer it with evidence. A report can classify an interesting question beside your subject without making it a useful fit for your product or audience.

Mark competitor-branded questions separately. A responsible answer may be a factual workflow comparison or a clearly scoped troubleshooting guide; it should not pretend to be the other vendor’s official support. If the task requires an account or software you have not tested, distinguish documentation-based instructions from execution.

Then inspect your full existing coverage, including other languages. A differently worded question may already have a good answer. Improve that page or its discoverability when appropriate, rather than creating a second page whose only new feature is a query-shaped title.

An illustrative exercise: three candidates, three decisions

Illustrative exercise: a fictional catalog team sees opportunities for “transparent bottle background,” a named competitor’s billing issue, and a reporting topic unrelated to merchandise. These are invented planning rows, not observations from an Itemlume account or evidence of actual query demand.

For the bottle question, read the existing glass-cutout guide first. If it already explains transmitted backgrounds, update or link that answer when sufficient. Commission a separate bottle guide only if it resolves a distinct remaining decision or adds useful evidence.

For the billing question, account-specific entitlement cannot be inferred from a keyword. The team can link appropriate official help and describe its limits, but cannot diagnose an unknown person’s plan. The unrelated topic is declined, even if its ecosystem range looks larger.

Fictional opportunityQuestion to resolveEditorial outcome
Transparent bottle backgroundDoes an existing guide already solve it?Update or link the existing answer when sufficient
Other vendor’s billing issueCan we support the answer without private account access?Keep scope factual or decline
Unrelated reporting topicDoes it serve our actual audience?Decline despite a tempting range

Document information gain and measure the right result

For a genuinely uncovered question, write one sentence explaining what the proposed page adds beyond the results you have inspected: a tested example, an original decision aid, a clearer bounded answer or another useful resource. Save the source and review date with that decision.

After any actual publication, keep discovery, citation and useful site activity as separate observations. A new opportunity row is not publication approval; a changed citation signal is not automatically a sale. Compare like reporting periods and record what you can really observe.

This guide interprets public beta documentation and supplies an editorial filtering method. It does not report an Itemlume Bing account test, measured keyword volume, competitor citation ranking, a published new page, or a guaranteed way to obtain AI citations.

For subsequent measurement, use the guide to separating AI citations from referral traffic.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does an opportunity query prove I have no relevant indexed page?

No. The documented opportunity concerns AI presence in that reporting context. Check your existing page, its scope and actual index evidence separately.

Should I copy a competitor-branded query into a new page title?

Only if you can provide a useful, accurately scoped answer that fits your audience. A report entry does not justify impersonating official support or duplicating existing coverage.
