Why does Canva Bulk Create print my product image URL instead of showing the photo?

Canva Bulk Create can print a product image URL when the connected sheet cell contains a cloud-storage link as text rather than an image embedded in the cell. Check the source cell, confirm the design uses an image frame or grid, and verify that each design page’s image field is connected to the intended column.

01 / WHY DOES CANVA BULK CREATE PRINT MY PRODUCT IMAGE URL INSTEAD OF SHOWING THE PHOTO?

Isolate the source of the text

Work on a duplicate of the product sheet and a copy of the Canva design so the live asset stays unchanged. Choose one affected product row and record the exact column header, cell contents, and page where the URL appears. This gives you a small fixture to diagnose without changing every product record.

In the duplicate sheet, inspect the cell itself. If it displays a URL string, Canva is receiving text, not embedded media. A link that opens the photo in a browser is still not evidence that the cell contains an image. Look for the photo displayed inside the cell; an image merely floating over the sheet is not embedded in that cell.

02 / WHY DOES CANVA BULK CREATE PRINT MY PRODUCT IMAGE URL INSTEAD OF SHOWING THE PHOTO?

Check the design connection

In the Canva design, inspect the target on the affected page. Bulk Create image placeholders need to be frames or grids, and the page needs a field connection for the intended image column. A text box connected to that column will print its value, including a URL. A frame without the right connection may remain empty or show another field’s content.

Compare the affected page with any other page in the design instead of assuming connections carry over. The supplied Canva guidance says each page needs field connections, so inspect the page where the failure occurs and confirm its image placeholder is connected to the matching column.

03 / WHY DOES CANVA BULK CREATE PRINT MY PRODUCT IMAGE URL INSTEAD OF SHOWING THE PHOTO?

Run a two-row fixture

Illustrative exercise, not a tested Canva result: prepare two small copies of a source sheet with the same product-name and image-column headers. Asset A is “Sable mug”, whose image value is a cloud-storage URL stored as plain text. Asset B is “Ivory mug”, whose distinguishable photo is embedded inside its image cell. Use separate source copies so the test does not assume a mixed-type column is accepted.

In a duplicate design, inspect which element is connected to the image field. A text box displaying Asset A’s URL confirms a text connection; it does not prove that Canva fetched the photo. Connect the image-containing field from Asset B to the intended image frame and generate one design. Pass means the Ivory mug photo appears in that frame. If a URL still prints, inspect the field type and target element. If the frame is empty, inspect cell embedding and the page connection; do not treat an empty frame as proof that the source photo is unavailable.

04 / WHY DOES CANVA BULK CREATE PRINT MY PRODUCT IMAGE URL INSTEAD OF SHOWING THE PHOTO?

Choose the next action and accept the fix

Accept the change only when the generated design for Asset B visibly shows the intended Ivory mug photo in the correct frame, with the expected product-name field alongside it. Check every page that uses the image field. Once the small fixture passes, apply the verified cell format and page connection to the product rows you intend to process.

  1. If the source cell shows only a URL, replace the test value with an image embedded in the cell; do not rely on the cloud link opening elsewhere.
  2. If the cell visibly contains embedded media but the generated design shows text or the wrong image, reconnect the page’s image frame to the intended image column, then regenerate the single-record fixture.
  3. If the generated design is correct but a video preview appears static, inspect the final design separately; a static preview alone does not establish that the image field failed.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Why does the URL work in my browser but not as a Bulk Create photo?

Opening a URL proves the link can be accessed in that context; it does not make the cell an embedded image. Canva treats cloud photo-storage URLs in the column as text, so test with an image embedded in the cell.

Does a static video preview mean Bulk Create failed?

Not necessarily. Canva’s guidance notes that video previews can be static. Inspect the final design separately, while also checking the generated image field and its page connection.
