PRODUCT ASSETS / EDITING AND PUBLISHING
Why are Canva download settings different on my laptop and phone?
Canva download defaults are local to the device and design type, so a laptop’s choices should not be expected to appear on your phone. Record the required format and options in a release handoff, then confirm them on the device you use to export; recheck page selection each time because it is not retained after closing the design.
Separate defaults from release requirements
A difference between your laptop and phone does not by itself mean the design changed or that one export is wrong. Canva’s download defaults are device-local and depend on design type. Treat each device’s displayed choices as local defaults, not as a shared release specification.
For a product asset, write down the required output before exporting. Include the format and any options that matter for this specific release, along with the intended pages. The source facts do not establish that every option is available for every design or device, so record only choices you can actually see.
Make a non-destructive comparison
Use a duplicate or test copy of the owned design, with a clear label such as “Sample product label - export check” (illustrative name). Do not change the live asset just to make the devices agree. Keep the design type the same for the comparison; otherwise, device and design-type differences are mixed together.
- On the laptop, open the test copy and note the displayed download format and options. Record the intended page selection separately.
- On the phone, open the same test copy and inspect the corresponding download choices. Note what differs instead of assuming the laptop values transferred.
- Compare each device’s choices with the written release handoff. If a required choice is missing or unclear, pause that export and verify the intended deliverable with the person or workflow that owns the specification.
Illustrative exercise: compare two defined outputs
Illustrative exercise. Define the fictional asset as a two-page “Northstar refill pouch” design (illustrative product and page count). Define Output A as a PNG export of page 1 only, and Output B as a PDF export of both pages; these formats, values, and page selections are illustrative requirements, not tested results or claims about available controls.
On the laptop, note whether the displayed choices can produce Output A; on the phone, make the same observation independently. A pass for a device means the observed choices let you select the format and pages required by the handoff before exporting. A fail means a required choice is absent, ambiguous, or the wrong pages remain selected. Do not call the comparison a pass merely because both devices show the same defaults.
Branch on the evidence
If the format or options differ but each device can be set to the documented requirement, use the required choices for that export and record the difference as device-local behavior. Do not spend time trying to synchronize defaults.
If a required choice cannot be found, or the available choices do not match the handoff, do not export that release from that device. Confirm the intended format and options, check that the same design type and test copy are open, then retry on the device where the required choices are visible. If neither device provides them, investigate the design or export workflow rather than assuming a settings-sync problem.
Verify pages at release time
Page selection is not retained after closing a design. Before every release export, explicitly inspect the selected pages again, even if you used the same device and design earlier. Record the final format, options, selected pages, device, and export date in the handoff so another person can compare the delivered file with the requirement.
Acceptance condition: the exported file matches the handoff’s required format and options, contains exactly the intended pages, and the handoff records what was checked on the exporting device. If any of those checks is unresolved, the export is not accepted as the release copy.

Frequently asked questions
Will changing the download format on my laptop change it on my phone?
Do not assume so. Download defaults are local to the device and design type; record the required release format and set or confirm it on the exporting device.
Why did my page selection reset after I reopened the design?
Page selections are not retained after closing the design. Explicitly confirm the intended pages before each release export.
