Which Canva PDF should I send for a packaging proof: Standard or Print?
Use PDF Standard for a review copy when the recipient only needs to inspect wording, layout, and general appearance. Use PDF Print when a supplier requests a print-oriented PDF, but treat neither option as a physical proof: confirm dimensions, inspect small lettering, and follow the supplier’s specification before approval.
Start With the Delivery Purpose
In Canva, open a non-destructive copy of the packaging design and use Download to compare PDF Standard and PDF Print. The choice is not a general quality label. It depends on what the recipient must do with the file and what the packaging supplier has requested.
Choose PDF Standard when the file is primarily for on-screen review, internal wording approval, or a quick layout check. Choose PDF Print when the supplier specifically asks for PDF Print or needs a print-oriented handoff. Do not infer that PDF Print proves the final package will match the screen or a press result.
- Duplicate the design or export a copy without changing the owned production asset.
- Record the intended use: screen review, supplier handoff, or both.
- In Canva’s Download controls, export the relevant PDF option and keep the two files clearly named, such as Review-Standard and Supplier-Print. These names are illustrative.
- Open each exported PDF in a viewer and inspect the evidence below before sending anything.
Inspect Evidence That Matters
First inspect the package dimensions in the design and compare them with the supplier’s stated dimensions or template. A PDF option does not correct an incorrect canvas size. Next, zoom into the smallest required lettering, including ingredients, warnings, net contents, and contact information. Look for missing characters, unexpected line breaks, softened edges, or text that has become too small to read.
Also inspect cropped photos and other placed imagery. Canva’s PDF export can retain original cropped photos, so the visible crop should be checked in the exported file rather than assumed from the editor. If the asset contains SVG artwork, remember that choosing SVG would not turn embedded photographic pixels into editable paths; do not use a format label as evidence that every element is vector-editable.
| Evidence | Pass condition | Failure response |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | Exported document dimensions match the supplier specification. | Stop and correct the design or obtain the required template. |
| Small lettering | Required text is complete, legible, and not unexpectedly reflowed. | Fix text size, spacing, or layout, then export again. |
| Images and crops | Visible photos and crops match the approved design. | Investigate the source image, crop, and export before handoff. |
Illustrative exercise
Define Asset A as a front label containing the fictional product name “North Pier Tea” in small lettering, with a product photo cropped to show only the tin. Define Asset B as the back label containing ingredients, a fictional net-content value of “250 g,” and a supplier-required finished size of 90 mm by 140 mm. These names, values, and dimensions are illustrative.
Export both assets as PDF Standard and PDF Print. Compare A/B only after opening the files: A passes if the product name and tin crop are unchanged and readable in both exports. B passes if the ingredients and net-content text are complete and the document dimensions match the supplier’s 90 mm by 140 mm requirement. A failure in either export means the file is not ready for that stated purpose.
Branch on the Result
If the supplier has named a required PDF option, follow that requirement and send only after the dimension and lettering checks pass. If no option is specified, send PDF Standard for an internal or screen-only review, then ask the supplier which PDF option and specifications they require before treating the file as a handoff. If the PDF looks correct but the physical package still matters, request or review the supplier’s proof process separately; PDF Print is not a physical proof.
Options can vary by Canva account, so if one of the PDF choices is absent, do not substitute an unverified format automatically. Record the available option and ask the recipient whether it is acceptable.

Frequently asked questions
Is PDF Print always the correct choice for packaging?
No. Use it when the supplier requests it or when the delivery purpose calls for a print-oriented PDF. The supplier’s specification and the exported dimensions still control acceptance.
Does PDF Standard mean the file is unsuitable for reviewing packaging?
No. It can be appropriate for on-screen review of wording, layout, and general appearance. It should not be treated as evidence that the package has passed physical production or supplier checks.
