PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why won’t Descript Regenerate smooth the edited line in my product demonstration?
Regenerate can smooth an awkward spoken edit without changing the approved words, but its selection must meet specific conditions. A selection can include one edit point with surrounding words; it cannot span multiple edit points, a scene boundary, or Ignored text. First identify what the selection contains. Do not treat an unavailable Regenerate action as proof that every cut is unsupported.
Identify the repair the merchant actually needs
A product presenter may say the correct model number but pause awkwardly before the next sentence. After removing the pause, the joined speech sounds abrupt. This is a potential Regenerate task because the intended wording remains unchanged.
Descript's current Regenerate workflow is documented for English audio and video. It can rebuild speech around an edit to improve continuity while retaining the original spoken wording and voice.
That differs from correcting a genuinely wrong product claim. If the presenter said model K8 instead of K3, smoothing the join does not replace the spoken model number. Changing spoken words requires a separate supported speech workflow involving a Custom AI Speaker.
Before examining selection restrictions, classify the request as either repairing an edit seam or replacing spoken content. These are different production responsibilities.
Access to a Custom AI Speaker does not establish permission to generate a person’s voice. Use only the permissions and approved recordings appropriate to the actual project.
Inspect edit points, scene boundaries, and Ignored text
A valid Regenerate selection can include a single edit point. Descript recommends selecting a few words on either side of the dashed edit boundary to provide context.
The operation becomes unavailable when the selection contains multiple edit points, crosses a scene boundary, or includes Ignored text.
For a rough join between two approved phrases, identify the intended edit boundary and evaluate a focused selection around it.
If the selection spans several cuts or scenes, determine which individual join actually needs repair. Narrow the selection only when doing so preserves the intended speech and scene structure.
Do not flatten an entire approved sequence or delete Ignored text merely to make the operation available. Those changes can alter editorial meaning beyond the original repair request.
The selection's structure, rather than its apparent length alone, is the decisive eligibility issue.
Illustrative exercise: one seam versus several boundaries
Illustrative exercise — fictional merchant scenarios. No Descript operation, audio editing, video editing, or AI generation was executed.
Input A is an approved coffee-machine demonstration. The presenter correctly describes the heating function, but removing a hesitation leaves one audible edit seam.
The appropriate branch is to identify that single dashed boundary and evaluate a selection containing nearby words on both sides. The goal is smoother delivery without changing the approved statement.
Input B is a skincare advertisement where the selected passage crosses a scene transition, several edits, and Ignored text.
The merchant should identify the particular join requiring attention and reconsider the selection boundaries. The entire passage should not be treated as one eligible Regenerate operation.
If either recording contains an incorrect product claim, that issue belongs to a separate approved speech-correction task.
Handle previously regenerated audio deliberately
A segment that has already been regenerated has a different editing state. Descript requires Keep to convert the generated result into ordinary audio before another Regenerate operation can be attempted.
Keep should not be interpreted as guaranteed restoration of hidden edit structure or earlier speech content.
When assessing another repair, identify the current audio state and the exact remaining seam. Do not repeatedly regenerate a broad passage without a defined reason.
Review whether the proposed change preserves the approved words, speaker delivery, and relationship to the visible product action.
The handoff decision is complete when the editor can identify one eligible repair boundary or explain why the requested selection requires a different editing approach.
Illustrative exercise — Regenerate selection eligibility
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Fictional advertisement | Observed issue | Selection structure | Merchant decision | Required review |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: Coffee-machine demonstration | Awkward join after removing hesitation | One edit point with surrounding approved words | Evaluate focused Regenerate | Confirm speech continuity and unchanged product wording |
| B: Skincare advertisement | Broad passage selected for repair | Multiple edits, scene boundary, and Ignored text | Identify one legitimate seam or use another editing approach | Preserve intended scene structure and spoken meaning |

Frequently asked questions
Does Regenerate reject every selection containing an edit point?
No. One edit point is allowed. A selection containing multiple edit points, a scene boundary, or Ignored text is ineligible.
Can Regenerate correct a product model number that the presenter actually said incorrectly?
Not through ordinary seam smoothing. Changing spoken words requires a separate supported speech workflow, rather than treating Regenerate as transcript correction.
