PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF

How should a merchant hand off a print layout when one product must repeat across cells but the saved template must remain reusable?

For one product repeated in every cell, build the page in Lightroom Classic’s Single Image/Contact Sheet layout and enable Repeat One Photo Per Page. For one photo shown at different sizes, use Picture Package; for multiple photos in a configurable arrangement, use Custom Package. Save the layout as a template, but hand off the selected source images separately: the saved template stores layout and print settings, not the photos.

01 / HOW SHOULD A MERCHANT HAND OFF A PRINT LAYOUT WHEN ONE PRODUCT MUST REPEAT ACROSS CELLS BUT THE SAVED TEMPLATE MUST REMAIN REUSABLE?

Choose the layout for the handoff

In Lightroom Classic, choose the layout type by the intended relationship between photos and cells. Single Image/Contact Sheet keeps cells at one size. With Repeat One Photo Per Page enabled, the selected photo fills all image cells on the page. Picture Package places one photo at different sizes. Custom Package supports multiple photos and configurations.

These are Lightroom Classic Print module behaviors. This guide does not assume the same controls or template behavior in Lightroom, Lightroom on the web, or Lightroom mobile. If the recipient is using a different application or client, confirm that workflow separately before promising the layout will open or behave the same way.

Illustrative exercise: separate image choice from structure

This fictional exercise is a handoff check, not a report of software testing. Imagine a merchant preparing a repeated page for a white ceramic mug and a multi-photo package showing a blue mug beside a detail photo of its handle. Preserve the approved originals and work from test copies.

For the repeated page, select the white-mug test copy in Single Image/Contact Sheet, enable Repeat One Photo Per Page, and inspect the cells. For the second layout, use Custom Package and place the blue-mug and handle-detail test copies in the intended arrangement. Save each layout as its own template, then reopen each with different test photos.

  1. Pass the repeated-page check only if every image cell shows the currently selected photo and the recipient can identify that photo as a separate source input.
  2. For the Custom Package check, inspect whether each intended photo occupies the expected cell. If the recipient needs one photo at different sizes instead, stop and make that layout in Picture Package rather than treating Custom Package as interchangeable.
  3. If either reopened template does not produce the intended cell arrangement, stop the handoff and correct the layout before sharing it. Do not infer that the template contains or assigns the original photos.

Inspect crop, fit, and visible content

A cell can show only part of a source image. In Lightroom Classic, Zoom To Fill fills image cells by cropping edges. If the product, label, or other required detail disappears, drag within the cell to adjust the visible portion. Picture Package uses Ctrl-drag on Windows or Command-drag on macOS for this adjustment.

Rotate To Fit rotates an image to its largest fit. Inspect the result rather than assuming that fill and fit produce the same framing. The acceptance condition is practical: the recipient can tell which photo is used, what portion is visible, and whether the cell behavior is intentional.

04 / HOW SHOULD A MERCHANT HAND OFF A PRINT LAYOUT WHEN ONE PRODUCT MUST REPEAT ACROSS CELLS BUT THE SAVED TEMPLATE MUST REMAIN REUSABLE?

Save the template and make the handoff explicit

A saved custom print template includes cells, margins, overlays, and print settings, but not new source images. The layout therefore travels separately from the selected photos. State which source files the recipient should select and which saved template defines the page structure.

For each template, include its intended layout type and a concise note about the expected photo-to-cell relationship. For a repeated page, name the single source photo to select and note that it repeats across image cells. For a Custom Package, identify the separate source photos and the intended arrangement. This is editorial handoff guidance; the note is not a Lightroom feature.

Before approving the handoff, reopen the saved template with different test images. If the layout remains recognizable but the photos change, that is expected: the template supplies structure and print settings, while the selected sources supply the images. If the recipient cannot distinguish those roles, revise the handoff note rather than implying that the template embeds the photos.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does a saved template include the product photos?

No. The documented saved custom print template contains cells, margins, overlays, and print settings, not new source images. Hand off or identify the source photos separately.

Which layout repeats one selected image across cells?

In Lightroom Classic, use Single Image/Contact Sheet and enable Repeat One Photo Per Page.

When should I use Picture Package instead of Custom Package?

Use Picture Package when one photo should appear at different sizes. Use Custom Package when you need multiple photos or configurations.

What if a product is clipped in a cell?

Zoom To Fill crops edges to fill an image cell. In Lightroom Classic, drag within the cell to adjust the visible portion; for Picture Package, use Ctrl-drag on Windows or Command-drag on macOS.
