PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
How should a merchant crop a Lightroom Reference View image without losing the approved comparison?
In Lightroom Classic, select Crop and read the warning before committing. Choose Cancel when the comparison must remain in Reference View; choose Continue only when you deliberately want to leave Reference View and crop outside the comparison. Keep the approved image as the Reference photo, use Reference photo lock when changing views, and record whether the crop occurred inside or outside the comparison.
Set Up A Controlled Comparison
This workflow applies to Lightroom Classic's Develop module. The documented behavior described here is not extended to Lightroom, Lightroom on the web, or Lightroom on mobile. Reference View separates the selected Reference photo from the editable Active photo. The Active photo is the one you crop or otherwise adjust; the Reference photo remains available for visual comparison.
Preserve the approved original before beginning. Work on a test copy or a duplicate working version, so the crop decision can be reviewed without replacing the approved source. Select the approved product image as the Reference photo and the image requiring work as the Active photo.
- Open Reference View with the approved product image designated as the Reference photo and the working product image designated as the Active photo.
- Confirm which image is editable before selecting Crop. Write down the two filenames or catalog labels in the handoff record.
- Use Reference photo lock when switching views so the selected approved reference remains the reference during the handoff.
Illustrative Exercise
Illustrative exercise: imagine a fictional merchant has two distinguishable inputs: Approved-Packshot, showing the accepted front-facing package, and Working-Packshot, showing the same product with extra space around it. The approved file is the Reference photo; the working file is the Active photo. This is a procedure example, not a report of a completed Lightroom Classic test.
With both images visible in Reference View, select Crop on Working-Packshot. Lightroom Classic displays a warning that selecting Crop will exit Reference View. Record the warning before choosing either response. This warning is the decision point, not an instruction to accept the crop automatically.
- Choose Cancel if the comparison must stay visible while you reconsider the crop. The observable result is that Reference View remains active, so the approved comparison is preserved.
- Choose Continue only if leaving Reference View is the intended handoff. The observable result is that Reference View exits, after which the crop is handled outside that comparison.
- Stop the exercise if the operator cannot state which image is approved, which image is active, or whether the crop happened inside or outside Reference View.
Choose The Correct Branch
Use the Cancel branch when the approved comparison is still needed for proportion, framing, or approval review. Cancel keeps the comparison available, so the next action is to inspect the framing again, document a revised crop decision, or leave the crop unchanged.
Use the Continue branch when the comparison has served its purpose and the crop should proceed outside Reference View. The next action is to confirm that the active working image, rather than the approved reference, is the image being cropped. Do not describe this as preserving the comparison: Continue explicitly exits it.
Reference photo lock supports view switching by preserving the selected reference. It does not turn the Reference photo into the editable image. The approved reference does not change unless settings are copied to it, so avoid copying settings into the reference during this handoff.
| Decision | Observed result | Next action | Handoff wording |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cancel | Reference View remains active | Continue reviewing the crop against the approved reference | Crop warning canceled; Reference View remains active |
| Continue | Reference View exits | Crop the working image outside the comparison | Crop handled outside Reference View |
Accept Or Stop
The handoff passes when the approved reference remains unchanged, the operator has recorded the warning response, and the record states whether the Crop warning was canceled or the crop was handled after leaving Reference View with Continue. It also passes when a later view switch still shows the intended approved reference because Reference photo lock was used.
Stop and return to the test copy when the warning response is unknown, the reference identity is uncertain, or the crop may have been applied to the wrong image. Do not delete the catalog, disable security, or replace the approved original as a default correction. Re-establish the Reference and Active roles, then repeat the decision on the working copy.
Editorial diagnosis: if merchants repeatedly lose the comparison at this point, the process problem is an undocumented branch, not necessarily a crop-quality problem. Require the handoff record to contain the warning response and comparison status before the file moves forward.

Frequently asked questions
Does Cancel undo a crop that was already accepted?
The documented behavior says Cancel stays in Reference View when the Crop warning appears. It does not establish a general undo procedure for a crop already accepted, so this guide uses Cancel before acceptance and recommends working on a test copy.
Can Reference photo lock make the approved image editable?
No. Reference photo lock preserves the selected reference while switching views. Reference View still distinguishes the Reference photo from the editable Active photo.
