PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF

How should a merchant release Photoshop product variants when a layer comp reports that its full state cannot be restored?

Treat the warning as a state-loss decision, not a cosmetic notification. Preserve the approved Photoshop file, make a test copy, inspect the warned layer comp against the intended product state, and clear the warning only when the remaining properties are acceptable. Clearing the warning does not restore deleted, merged or converted layer information.

01 / HOW SHOULD A MERCHANT RELEASE PHOTOSHOP PRODUCT VARIANTS WHEN A LAYER COMP REPORTS THAT ITS FULL STATE CANNOT BE RESTORED?

Set Up a Controlled Review

Keep the approved original unchanged and create a test copy for the release review. Work in Photoshop, where Layer Comps capture layer visibility, position, appearance and Smart Object comp selection. The warning matters because a referenced layer was deleted, merged or converted and the comp can no longer restore its full recorded state.

Illustrative exercise: use two fictional product inputs in the test copy. Input One is a front view with a visible label layer and a selected Smart Object comp. Input Two is a side view with that label hidden and the Smart Object showing a different nested comp. Create named comps for both inputs before making the test edit. These are manual examples, not completed Photoshop test results.

  1. Open the Layer Comps panel through Window > Layer Comps.
  2. Arrange the layers for each intended product view, choose Create New Layer Comp, and give each comp a meaningful name.
  3. Record which product variant each named comp represents before reviewing the warning.

Reproduce the Warning

In the test copy, remove, merge or convert one layer referenced by a named comp. Reopen or select that comp and observe the warning. Compare the warned state with the original arrangement you recorded. Look specifically at visibility, position, appearance and Smart Object comp selection, because those are the properties a Layer Comp captures.

For the illustrative exercise, suppose the warned Front View restores the product position and general appearance but the label visibility cannot return because its layer was merged. That is a meaningful loss. Suppose the warned Side View also loses the intended nested Smart Object comp. The second result requires a different release decision because the product artwork itself may now be the wrong source state.

  1. Select each affected named comp and note which recorded properties still appear correctly.
  2. Compare the visible product, layer placement, appearance and Smart Object selection with the approved reference.
  3. Stop the release review if the warned state cannot be identified clearly enough to assign to a product variant.

Choose the Release Branch

Use an editorial diagnosis, not an assumption about the cause: if the remaining state is visibly correct and the missing information is acceptable for that variant, the comp may proceed after the handoff records the loss. If a missing visibility, position, appearance or Smart Object comp changes the product representation, return to the test copy and rebuild or correct the layer structure before export.

In the illustrative exercise, the Front View can pass only if the merchant approves the label layer's unavailable information and records it. The Side View fails if the lost nested Smart Object selection changes the product artwork. Do not clear either warning merely to make the panel look clean.

  1. Pass the comp only when the remaining properties are acceptable for the named variant and the missing state is documented.
  2. Fail or stop the comp when a missing property changes the approved product representation or cannot be explained.
  3. When the remaining state is acceptable, clear the warning with the Layer Comps warning control; understand that this preserves remaining properties but does not restore missing layer information.

Export and Handoff

After the branch decision, verify that every product variant intended for release has a named comp. Use File > Export > Layer Comps To Files to export individual files with the comp names appended. The export step does not repair a damaged comp, so use only comps that passed the state review.

The handoff should identify the comp name, product variant, affected property and decision. For example, record that a label visibility reference was missing but the remaining state was approved, or that a nested Smart Object comp selection was not acceptable and the variant was held. This gives the recipient an observable reason for every released or stopped file.

  1. Confirm each release candidate has a named Layer Comp.
  2. Export the approved comps through File > Export > Layer Comps To Files.
  3. Match the resulting comp name to the handoff record and record any missing visibility, position, appearance or Smart Object comp state.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing a Layer Comp warning restore the deleted or merged layer?

No. Clearing the warning preserves the remaining properties but does not restore missing layer information.

Which Photoshop properties should be checked before release?

Check layer visibility, position, appearance and Smart Object comp selection, because Layer Comps capture those properties.

Can a nested Smart Object comp be part of the review?

Yes. Smart Object Properties Layer Comp can select nested source comps while retaining transforms. A lost nested selection should therefore be treated as a state decision when it affects the product view.

What must every exported variant have?

Every exported variant should correspond to a named Layer Comp, with the handoff recording any missing visibility, position, appearance or Smart Object comp state.
