PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why Did FASHN Product to Model Change the Pose and Background of My Reference Person?
Product to Model uses face_reference as an identity reference while generating a new image. It does not preserve the reference photograph's original pose and background. If your advertisement must retain an existing person's pose and setting while changing clothing, evaluate Try-On Max with model_image instead.
Identify What the Reference Photograph Must Preserve
A merchant may provide a model photograph for two very different reasons. One brief requires a recognizable person in a newly generated campaign image. Another requires the existing photograph's seated pose, camera composition, and environment to remain intact while clothing changes.
Those briefs should not be treated as equivalent. In Product to Model, face_reference serves the identity-reference role, not the role of a complete photograph whose pose and background must be retained. Decide which visual properties are fixed before choosing the workflow.
Choose the Workflow by Preservation Requirements
Choose by the property the merchant must preserve. Product to Model creates a new image using face_reference. For clothing replacement on an existing model photograph while retaining its pose and background, the documented alternative is Try-On Max with model_image.
Face guidance is not limited to identity alone: Product to Model's face_reference_mode defaults to match_reference, which favors the reference face's pose and expression. match_base gives more weight to the prompt or system default when generating pose and expression. These facial influences do not promise preservation of the original full-body pose, composition or background.
Neither workflow distinction guarantees exact identity reproduction, unchanged pixels or perfect garment details. Record fixed properties and permitted changes before requesting a candidate.
- Label the approved reference as an identity guide or an existing photograph whose scene must remain.
- Record the selected endpoint, actual image field and, for Product to Model with a face reference, face_reference_mode.
- Review identity, facial pose/expression, full-body pose, background and garment representation as separate observations.
Use the FASHN Product to Model reference definitions to check the existing-photo alternative and the two face_reference_mode behaviors.
In the production brief, separate model identity from pose and context before assigning each reference a responsibility.
Illustrative Exercise: Two Advertising Briefs
Illustrative exercise, not an executed API request: a café brief fixes the approved photograph's seated pose and scene, while a seasonal brief allows a new composition using an identity reference. Compare the workflow choices in the table, then record the actual endpoint and each preserved property in the worksheet.
| Merchant brief | Reference responsibility | Workflow to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Preserve seated pose and café background | Existing photograph defines the scene | Try-On Max with model_image |
| Use identity reference in a new campaign scene | Face reference informs identity | Product to Model with face_reference |
Build a Reference-Responsibility Handoff
Before production, label each reference by its intended responsibility: identity, pose, background, clothing, or overall composition. Do not simply attach a photograph with the instruction to keep everything.
For the café brief, reviewers should compare the intended existing pose and setting with the resulting image. For the seasonal brief, reviewers should assess the newly proposed composition against the approved identity-reference requirements.
Record the selected endpoint and the reason for choosing it. If the result changes something that the brief required to remain fixed, investigate workflow selection before rewriting unrelated creative directions.
This guide follows the documented Product to Model Preview behavior released September 2, 2025. The examples are planning exercises, not evidence of generated results or guaranteed preservation.

Frequently asked questions
Does face_reference mean FASHN will keep the entire original model photograph?
No. Product to Model generates a new image using an identity reference. face_reference_mode can also guide the face's pose and expression, but that is not a promise to retain the original photograph's whole-body pose, composition or background.
Does Try-On Max guarantee that every pixel outside the clothing remains identical?
The documented workflow is intended for clothing replacement on an existing model image while retaining pose and background. That does not establish a pixel-identical preservation guarantee; review the actual result.
