Why Is My GIMP Soft-Proof Preview Unchanged?
Selecting a soft-proof profile does not by itself enable the simulation. Turn on View → Color Management → Proof Colors, then check the assigned proof profile and rendering intent. An unchanged preview does not establish that a profile failed, that pixels were converted, or that the print will match the screen.
Selecting a Profile Is Not the Same as Displaying Its Simulation
GIMP provides Image → Color Management → Soft-Proof Profile… to associate a soft-proof profile with the image. The documentation explains that this is usually a profile for the specific printer intended to produce the artwork.
The dialog displays the currently assigned soft-proof profile and allows you to choose another. Its replacement selection defaults to None. You can select a previously used profile or choose a profile file from disk.
However, selecting a profile alone does not mean the proof simulation is visible. To view the intended approximation, enable View → Color Management → Proof Colors.
Decision branch: If you have selected a profile but see no simulation, check Proof Colors first. If the wrong profile is assigned, correct that selection before judging the preview.
The GIMP Soft-Proof Profile documentation describes selecting the simulation profile separately from displaying the proof.
Check Rendering Intent Separately
Rendering intent is the color-mapping choice used for the soft-proof simulation. GIMP places it under Image → Color Management → Soft-Proofing Rendering Intent, separately from the chosen proof profile and the Proof Colors display switch.
The documentation identifies Relative colorimetric as the default and usually the best choice. It also states that choosing Perceptual gives relative-colorimetric behavior unless a LUT monitor profile is used; most monitor profiles are matrix profiles.
LUT means lookup table. Here LUT and matrix describe the monitor/display profile, not the printer profile selected for soft proofing. Do not classify the printer's proof profile as LUT or matrix to answer this particular condition.
If the monitor-profile type is unknown, record its identity and mark the type unknown; consult its provider or the person managing display calibration. Meanwhile, first verify Proof Colors and the intended printer proof profile. An unchanged intent comparison alone does not establish a broken control or a failed print simulation.
The GIMP rendering-intent documentation gives the specific LUT-monitor qualification for Perceptual.
Illustrative Exercise: Compare Two Artwork Inputs
Illustrative exercise — hypothetical artwork, not tested GIMP files. A is a colorful promotional card; B is a packaging insert with restrained colors and small text.
For A, record the intended printer proof-profile identity. Keep that profile and the rendering intent unchanged while comparing Proof Colors off and on, then record the actual visible difference, including none.
For B, keep Proof Colors enabled and the proof profile fixed while comparing Relative colorimetric and Perceptual. Record the display-profile identity and its known LUT/matrix type, or unknown. Interpret the comparison using the documented monitor-profile qualification.
If the intended printer profile is unavailable, obtain it before relying on the simulation. If display-profile information is unknown or the views look similar, preserve that uncertainty rather than inventing a difference or treating it as verified print acceptance.
Separate Screen Proofing From Final Print Acceptance
Soft proofing previews an approximation using the selected output profile. Selecting its profile and enabling Proof Colors do not themselves convert the image's pixels or establish a physical match to paper, ink and printing conditions.
Keep the proof-profile identity, preview state, intent and relevant display-profile information in the review record. Any final print check remains a separate task with its own actual evidence; the cited documentation does not supply a verified result for a merchant's printer or packaging material.
For a separate image-profile decision, the Chinese GIMP assign-versus-convert guide explains assignment and conversion rather than the proof-view switch.
Soft-Proof Review Record — Fill With Actual Settings and Observations
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Comparison | Printer proof profile | Proof Colors and intent | Display-profile information | Actual observation | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: Preview off versus on | [Fill: actual profile name/file and intended output] | [Fill: off/on; intent held fixed] | [Fill: display-profile identity; LUT/matrix/unknown] | [Fill: actual color or tonal difference, including none] | [Fill: correct profile/state, investigate uncertainty or continue separate review] |
| B: Intent comparison | [Fill: profile held fixed] | [Fill: Proof Colors on; Relative versus Perceptual] | [Fill: type and information source, or unknown] | [Fill: actual difference; no invented result] | [Fill: consult profile provider if needed; physical print acceptance remains unverified] |

Frequently asked questions
Does selecting a soft-proof profile automatically turn on the print simulation?
No. The official instructions separately require View → Color Management → Proof Colors to display the soft-proof simulation. Check this view setting before concluding that the profile selection failed.
Does choosing Perceptual always produce a different preview or guarantee better printed colors?
No. GIMP documents relative-colorimetric behavior for Perceptual unless a LUT monitor profile is used. That condition concerns the display profile, not the printer proof profile. Record an unknown display-profile type as unknown; neither intent guarantees a physical print match.
