PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why does GIMP Readjust move the transform handles while keeping my product artwork changed?
Readjust restores the transform handles to their original square shape while keeping the current transformation and zoom. It helps you continue a complex adjustment in stages. If you expected the product artwork to return to its original geometry, the unchanged transform is documented behavior, not evidence that the button failed.
Understand the Three States You Are Managing
Unified Transform combines operations such as scaling, rotation, shearing, and perspective adjustment in one interactive tool. The visible handles represent different ways to modify the transformation. They are not independent objects that must always return to the original image boundary.
Readjust resets the transform handles to their original square shape while retaining the current transformation and zoom level. The documentation presents this as a way to build complex transformations in several steps. Judge the artwork separately from the arrangement of its controls.
Do not read the returned square handle frame as proof that the artwork has become square, unrotated or undistorted. Readjust keeps the current transformation; it is not a product-geometry repair. Review the preview before continuing with another drag.
Follow the Handles and Pivot Deliberately
Confirm the intended artwork layer before using the tool. Unified Transform combines scaling, rotation, shearing and perspective. Identify which type of handle you are about to drag rather than assuming every corner produces the same change.
The pivot is the reference point for certain transformations. Moving it changes the point around which applicable operations are calculated. If a product label rotates around an unexpected position, inspect the pivot before changing other parameters.
The Constrain options restrict particular transformations, while From pivot options make supported transformations operate relative to the pivot. These controls affect subsequent dragging behavior; they do not simply decorate the tool interface.
For a predictable workflow, change one control at a time. First identify the active transform target, then position the pivot if necessary, choose the relevant constraint, and only then drag the appropriate handle.
Illustrative Exercise: Two Product Artwork Inputs
Illustrative exercise — hypothetical artwork, not an observed GIMP test. Input A is a rectangular product label that needs a modest rotation. Input B is a package-front graphic that needs perspective adjustment to match a photographed box.
For Input A, select the artwork layer, activate Unified Transform, inspect the pivot, and rotate the preview. Choose Readjust before making another adjustment. Check whether the current visual rotation remains while the controls become easier to use.
For Input B, adjust the perspective handles to approximate the package face. If the handles become inconvenient, use Readjust and inspect the retained perspective before continuing. Keep an unchanged source copy as the reference; do not infer a reversed transformation from the handle frame.
Decision branch: if the artwork preview is appropriate but the handle arrangement is awkward, Readjust can support the next stage. If the product geometry is already unacceptable, stop and return to a known source or controlled prior state. If rotation follows an unexpected center, inspect the pivot before adding more changes.
Verify the Result Before Applying It
Before committing, inspect straight package edges, label alignment, corners, and whether the artwork still covers the intended surface. Check that any active Constrain or From pivot setting matches the operation you want.
Readjust does not establish that the perspective is geometrically accurate, nor does it verify that product claims remain legible. It simply helps continue manipulating an existing transformation.
Apply the transformation only when the preview is acceptable. Preserve an editable source copy so later packaging revisions do not require reconstructing the original artwork.
The instructions describe documented tool behavior, not guarantees about photographic realism or the outcome of a specific commercial design.
Illustrative exercise — handle frame versus retained artwork
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Input | Initial operation | Observed preview state to inspect | Decision branch | Acceptance check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: Rectangular label | Rotate around the chosen pivot | Rotation remains after Readjust | Use Readjust if handles are inconvenient; inspect pivot if rotation center is wrong | Label angle and position match the intended layout |
| B: Package-front artwork | Adjust perspective using corner handles | Current perspective remains while controls are repositioned | Readjust only to reorganize handles; stop if the artwork geometry is unacceptable | Corners and package edges align before applying |

Frequently asked questions
Does Readjust save or permanently apply the current transformation?
No. It repositions the handles for continued editing of the current transformation. Use the tool's application action when you intend to commit the result.
Does the returned square handle frame prove my package geometry is restored?
No. The documentation explicitly says the current transformation and zoom remain. Inspect the artwork against its source; the handle arrangement alone is not a geometry acceptance test.
