Why does my InDesign market export still show another market's wording after I hide its condition?

Inspect all conditions applied to the disputed text, not only the one you hid. Text with several conditions remains visible when any one is shown. Also check whether the selected condition set has an override: restoring its saved state and saving a new state are different decisions.

01 / WHY DOES MY INDESIGN MARKET EXPORT STILL SHOW ANOTHER MARKET'S WORDING AFTER I HIDE ITS CONDITION?

Resolve the visibility rule before changing the wording

InDesign uses an OR rule for text with multiple conditions: any shown condition keeps it visible. Hidden text is excluded from printing and export, and hiding can change layout and numbering. Hide All affects conditional text; Unconditional instead removes applied conditions.

A phrase tagged for both a market and a promotion is not automatically restricted to that market during that promotion. Read the actual assignment. If the promotion remains shown, hiding the market condition alone will not establish the intended exclusion.

Write the desired edition in terms of what the reader should see. Common instructions may belong in every edition, while a shipping claim may apply only to one market. Correct the assignment against that meaning rather than deleting accurate wording to hide a visibility mistake.

Open Window > Type & Tables > Conditional Text to inspect the selected text and its applied conditions. If the Set menu is hidden, choose Show Options from the panel menu before selecting, restoring or redefining a set.

The visibility rule and text-assignment controls are documented in InDesign hidden conditional text, multiple-condition OR and reflow.

02 / WHY DOES MY INDESIGN MARKET EXPORT STILL SHOW ANOTHER MARKET'S WORDING AFTER I HIDE ITS CONDITION?

Illustrative exercise A: restore a saved market edition

A fictional homeware catalog has a saved local-market condition set. Someone temporarily shows an additional promotional condition, and a shipping sentence unexpectedly returns. Inspect the sentence's complete condition assignment as well as the current visibility controls.

A plus sign beside a set indicates overrides. Reselecting that set removes them; Redefine saves the changed visibility settings. For this temporary deviation, restore the intended saved set rather than turning an accidental display into its new default.

Then check the disputed sentence again. Restoring the set is not enough if the text's condition assignments themselves express the wrong rule. Compare the actual edition with its approved market meaning, including shared words that should remain visible.

This truth table is an unexecuted illustrative exercise. To restore an already saved Market-A edition after a temporary visibility deviation, reselect that set. Use Redefine only when the revised combination is intentionally approved. If the desired meaning is “Market-A and Seasonal together,” simply applying those two independent conditions does not create an AND rule.

For the saved-set and override commands, see InDesign condition sets, overrides and redefine versus reselect.

03 / WHY DOES MY INDESIGN MARKET EXPORT STILL SHOW ANOTHER MARKET'S WORDING AFTER I HIDE ITS CONDITION?

Illustrative exercise B: deliberately revise the edition

Another edition now has an approved seasonal invitation that should remain part of its saved configuration. Set the intended visibility and use Redefine for that chosen set. This is a deliberate revision, unlike restoring A's temporary override.

Review what else uses the affected conditions before accepting the new combination. Showing a seasonal condition may reveal another sentence farther through the document. A single correct opening page cannot establish that the rest of the edition now matches its purpose.

Keep unconditional information distinct. Hide All is not a blank-document command, and removing conditions with Unconditional is not a way to suppress text. Choose the visibility and assignment that express the actual publication requirement.

04 / WHY DOES MY INDESIGN MARKET EXPORT STILL SHOW ANOTHER MARKET'S WORDING AFTER I HIDE ITS CONDITION?

Inspect the edition after its text reflows

Review the resulting page sequence, headings, cross-references and product descriptions after switching visibility. A shorter market text can move content and change page numbering, so previously noted page positions need another look.

Inspect the intended output itself before release, including the sentence that triggered the investigation. The meaningful comparison is the complete market edition, not merely a screenshot of eye icons.

These illustrative exercises were not executed. No InDesign condition change, export, printing or publication test occurred, and no Itemlume integration is claimed.

Illustrative exercise: restore an edition versus save an approved revision

These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Must every condition on a text range be shown for it to appear?

No. Any shown condition keeps multiply conditioned text visible. Inspect all applied conditions when hiding one does not remove the text.

Should I use Redefine to undo a temporary visibility change?

Not for that purpose. Reselect the saved set to remove its overrides. Redefine intentionally saves the current visibility settings into the set.
