PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why does an old product caption remain in one IPTC view after I replace it?
First establish whether the old caption remains inside the exact image file. ExifTool can reveal more than one IPTC location, including non-standard locations identified by numbered reading groups. A stale value in one stored location is different from a storefront displaying a cached value. Inspect those stages separately.
Read location information with the values
A list of captions without group information can hide the reason two applications disagree. ExifTool’s IPTC documentation explains that non-standard IPTC locations can occur in JPEG and TIFF-based files. Reading with family-1 group information distinguishes these locations using names such as IPTC2 and IPTC3.
Create a record of the exact working file, group, field and value. Compare the same field across the reported locations before concluding that the editor ignored the replacement. Do not assume that every image has duplicate locations, or that the number identifies the newest or authoritative caption. The approved editorial text must supply that decision.
Keep reading labels separate from writing groups
Numbered group names explain the read result. The documentation says that writing may specify IPTC as the group; it does not make the numbered reading groups interchangeable write targets. Copying a label from an inspection table into a write operation without checking this distinction can lead the investigation away from the supported behavior.
ExifTool documents updating tags in all existing IPTC locations to keep them consistent, while creating a new IPTC group only in the standard location. Verify a new output against that behavior. Do not indiscriminately remove all metadata to silence a disagreement: unrelated rights or provenance information needs its own authorized handling.
Illustrative exercise: two different stale-caption reports
In fictional case A, a working file exposes an old caption in one reported location and the approved caption in another. Record both before changing anything. Apply the intended replacement through the supported IPTC writing workflow on a separate copy, then read the locations again. The decision depends on whether the required caption is now consistent across the existing locations, not merely whether one friendly preview shows the new words.
In case B, every reported IPTC location in the actual output contains the approved caption, but the catalog continues showing its predecessor. That observation does not support another stored-IPTC repair. Confirm which exact file the catalog uses and which field it displays, then investigate its delivery or refresh behavior. It may use an earlier asset or another data source; neither possibility should be declared proven without evidence.
Approve the file and its consuming view separately
Retain the pre-change inspection, new-file inspection and approved wording together. A subsequent image conversion creates another artifact to inspect. Matching IPTC values in one local output does not prove that a later rendition retained the same metadata or that every receiving application reads the same record.
Stop the file-level repair when the applicable stored locations have been checked against the intended replacement and unexplained old values are resolved. Keep a separate open item if the receiving view remains stale. This is a reconciliation method for a specific metadata problem, not a claim that ExifTool purges storefront caches or that multiple IPTC records are always erroneous.

These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Case | Stored-location observation | Approved reference | New-file check | Remaining branch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Locations disagree | Approved replacement caption | Read all reported locations after writing a copy | Resolve any remaining stored old value |
| B | All reported locations agree | Same approved caption | Inspected file is consistent | Verify the catalog file and field before another write |

Frequently asked questions
Does IPTC2 mean the caption is newer than IPTC?
No. The numbered family-1 reading name distinguishes a non-standard location; use the approved editorial record to decide the intended value.
Should I keep rewriting the image if every reported location is correct?
No. First verify the catalog’s actual file and field. A correct inspected output and a stale consuming view point to a different unresolved stage.
