PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF

Why Does My Reusable Product-Ad Sequence Enter Kdenlive as One Clip and Fail to Expand?

A reusable product-ad sequence appears as one clip because Kdenlive stores a timeline selection as a Library clip. To recover its individual elements, insert the Library clip through the Project Bin and use Expand Clip. Expansion also requires enough empty neighboring tracks across the entire sequence.

01 / WHY DOES MY REUSABLE PRODUCT-AD SEQUENCE ENTER KDENLIVE AS ONE CLIP AND FAIL TO EXPAND?

Create the Reusable Library Clip

The Library is separate from the Project Bin and can hold reusable timeline material independently of the current project.

Select the required timeline clips, including relevant transitions or compositions, then choose Add Timeline Selection to Library. This preserves the selected arrangement for reuse.

Do not confuse the Library with a media-backup system. A reusable timeline arrangement is not a guarantee that every referenced source file has been archived or transferred.

02 / WHY DOES MY REUSABLE PRODUCT-AD SEQUENCE ENTER KDENLIVE AS ONE CLIP AND FAIL TO EXPAND?

Insert and Expand the Clip Correctly

Use Add Clip to Project to place the Library item into the Project Bin. The documented workflow does not support dragging a Library item directly onto the timeline.

Place the resulting clip on the timeline and select it. Choose Sequence → Current Clip → Expand Clip to expand its constituent elements.

Expansion proceeds from the bottom upward. If there are not enough tracks above but enough tracks exist in the timeline, Kdenlive attempts to move the Library clip down before expansion. The complete expansion interval still needs the required adjacent tracks free of conflicting clips or transitions.

Illustrative Exercise: Two Product-Ad Inputs

Illustrative exercise — hypothetical sequences, not executed software tests. Input A contains a product shot, a title overlay, and a composition arranged across several tracks. Input B contains a similar reusable arrangement but is inserted beside occupied tracks.

For Input A, add the Library item to the Project Bin, insert it into an empty timeline area, and run Expand Clip. Inspect the resulting track arrangement.

For Input B, examine the complete duration and neighboring tracks in a working copy before expanding. If clips or transitions obstruct the required area, choose an empty insertion region or adjust the copied arrangement deliberately. Do not delete approved edits merely to make expansion succeed.

Decision branch: If the item remains one clip, confirm that Expand Clip was invoked. If expansion cannot fit, resolve track occupancy rather than repeatedly inserting the same Library item.

04 / WHY DOES MY REUSABLE PRODUCT-AD SEQUENCE ENTER KDENLIVE AS ONE CLIP AND FAIL TO EXPAND?

Inspect the Expanded Project

After expansion, Kdenlive creates a Project Bin folder named Pasted clips. Inspect this folder alongside the timeline to identify the expanded material.

Check clip order, track placement, transition coverage, and composition relationships. An apparently empty region on one track does not establish that the entire multi-track expansion area is free.

For team handoff, distinguish the original Library item, its Project Bin representation, and the expanded timeline elements. Confirm source-media availability separately before transferring the project.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can I drag a Library clip directly onto the timeline?

No. The documented procedure uses Add Clip to Project first, followed by insertion from the Project Bin.

Why does expansion fail when the destination track looks empty?

Expansion requires sufficient adjacent track space throughout the arrangement. Clips or transitions on neighboring tracks can obstruct it.
