How Can I Add a Reusable Offer Badge Without Replacing the Existing Kdenlive Title?
Use a title Pattern when you want to add a reusable offer badge to an existing title. Unlike a title template, adding a Pattern inserts its saved objects without replacing the title's existing content.
Understand Patterns Versus Title Templates
Kdenlive Patterns store reusable title objects or groups of objects. They are useful for recurring promotional elements such as discount badges, decorative shapes, and short offer labels.
The important distinction is how the content enters the title. Adding a Pattern preserves existing title objects and adds the saved elements. A title template serves a different purpose and should not be treated as an equivalent additive operation.
For an advertisement containing a product name, choose a Pattern when the objective is to retain that name and insert another graphic element.
Create and Insert the Reusable Badge
Open the Title Editor and prepare the objects that make up the badge. Select the relevant object or group of objects, open Patterns, and choose Add pattern.
To reuse the saved Pattern, open the destination title and double-click the Pattern. Kdenlive adds its stored objects to the current title instead of replacing existing content.
Inspect the title immediately afterward. Confirm that the original product name remains and that the inserted badge contains the intended offer information.
A Pattern is reusable content, not a documented mechanism for automatically updating every previously inserted instance when the saved Pattern changes.
Illustrative Exercise: Two Advertisement Titles
Illustrative exercise — hypothetical inputs, not executed Kdenlive tests. Input A is a product title reading 'Ceramic Travel Mug' that needs a reusable 'Weekend Offer' badge. Input B is a separate title reading 'Insulated Lunch Bag' that needs the same badge design but different offer wording.
For Input A, select the badge objects, save them through Patterns → Add pattern, and double-click the Pattern in the existing title. Verify that 'Ceramic Travel Mug' remains visible.
For Input B, insert the saved Pattern into its existing title, then inspect the inserted wording against the intended offer.
Decision branch: If you need to add objects while preserving the title, use a Pattern. If you need a fundamentally different title starting point, evaluate the template workflow separately. Do not assume that editing the Pattern will automatically revise older title instances.
Verify Reuse Without Risky Deletion
Check the original product name, inserted badge text, and all required graphic elements in a copy of the title before using the arrangement for additional advertisements.
Deleting a Pattern happens immediately, without a warning, and cannot be undone. Therefore, do not delete a Pattern merely to troubleshoot an incorrect insertion.
Instead, inspect the current title and its inserted objects. Correct the title content as needed while preserving reusable Patterns that may still be required.
Before delivery, review each title instance independently. Reusing a badge design does not verify the accuracy of its offer wording.
Illustrative Exercise — Offer Badge Reuse and Existing-Title Preservation
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Title input | Existing product name | Pattern content | Insertion decision | Post-insertion acceptance check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: Travel mug advertisement | Ceramic Travel Mug | Weekend Offer badge | Double-click the saved Pattern | Original product name remains; badge objects appear |
| B: Lunch bag advertisement | Insulated Lunch Bag | Reusable badge design with offer wording to review | Add Pattern, then verify the title instance | Product name remains; inserted offer wording is checked independently |

Frequently asked questions
Will adding a Pattern remove my existing product name?
No. The documented Pattern operation adds saved objects to the current title without replacing existing title content.
Will changing or deleting a Pattern update previously created titles?
Do not assume automatic synchronization. The documentation describes adding reusable objects, not linked updates to existing instances. Deleting a Pattern is immediate, has no warning, and cannot be undone.
