Logo studio / QUESTION GUIDE
How do you define clear space around a new logo?
Define a measurable exclusion area around the approved logo and test it in real layouts. Clear space controls what may approach the mark; optical alignment controls where the mark appears to sit. Keep those decisions separate so an editor does not reduce breathing room while correcting a visual balance issue.
Choose a reference unit
Use a stable feature of the approved artwork, such as a selected symbol dimension, as the basis for a proposed spacing rule. Record which feature is measured and where the boundary begins. Do not pick a rule from a competitor merely because it looks official; test whether it serves your own mark.
For an illustrative symbol-and-name lockup, the symbol width may provide an understandable unit. The proposed amount is a design decision, not an industry requirement or a guarantee of recognition.
Separate protected space from alignment
| Decision | Purpose | Do not confuse with |
|---|---|---|
| Clear space | Keep nearby objects away | Page margin |
| Optical alignment | Make placement look balanced | Permission to crowd the mark |
| Minimum size | Preserve readability | Clear-space unit |
| Background version | Maintain contrast | Changing brand geometry |
An artwork file may include transparent padding that differs from the protected space. Tell the recipient whether the file’s canvas includes the rule or whether they must apply it in layout.
Develop the selected concept into a usable master
Logo studio can help explore brand meaning and element combinations. After choosing a concept, refine the master in an external design workflow and create a spacing diagram there. Itemlume does not generate an automatically enforced brand guideline that prevents other software from placing content too close.
Try a header, label and social image with neighboring text. If the required space makes the layout impractical, review the lockup or application version rather than silently ignoring the rule.
Write the rule so another editor can apply it
Deliver a simple diagram, the measured reference and an example of a prohibited intrusion. Include the correct master version. A sentence saying give the logo enough room leaves every recipient to make another subjective decision.
Use optical alignment for visual placement and template boundaries for reusable layouts. Recheck the spacing when the mark’s geometry changes; the old unit may no longer describe the new master.

Frequently asked questions
Is the transparent canvas the clear-space rule?
Only if the handoff explicitly defines it that way.
Can I move the mark optically within a layout?
Yes, while preserving its protected relationship to nearby content.
Is one spacing amount mandatory for every brand?
No. Define and test a rule appropriate to the actual mark.
