Logo studio / QUESTION GUIDE
How do you check a logo for confusing letters and numbers?
Ask a reviewer to transcribe the wordmark without seeing the brand brief. Compare the result with the exact approved spelling, especially where letters resemble numbers or joined shapes resemble another character. This is a readability check; it does not measure brand recognition or establish name availability.
Fix the spelling before judging style
Keep the brand’s approved spelling, capitalization and any numeral in a plain-text reference. Explain whether a final character is a letter or number. A generator can produce an elegant but different name, and a reviewer who already knows the intended name may read past the error.
For an illustrative brand named FIELD01, the zero and one belong to the name rather than a decorative date. Keep that distinction visible in the source record. Do not silently replace them with letters because the wordmark looks smoother.
Inspect ambiguous joins
| Relationship | Possible misreading | Check |
|---|---|---|
| O beside 0 | Two identical round shapes | Distinct numeral form |
| I beside 1 | Repeated vertical strokes | Readable spelling |
| r beside n | Looks like m | Review join and spacing |
| Custom ligature | Creates another letter | Transcribe without the brief |
Use actual final artwork in the test. An attractive large mockup may hide the ambiguity that appears in a plain header or small receipt.
Generate concepts, then refine type precisely
In Logo studio, supply the exact name, business and visual intent. Review concepts for both meaning and spelling. Use a qualified external typography workflow to refine the selected wordmark; a raster concept is not an editable font file or guaranteed exact lettering.
Compare the corrected artwork in a simple black-and-white view before applying brand color. If color is the only cue separating a number from a letter, the mark may fail in single-color applications. Ask for another readable form rather than accepting ambiguity as creativity.
Keep a transcription record
Record what the reviewer read, the version shown and the correction made. Do not report a small informal check as a statistically measured recognition result. Repeat the read after changes to spacing or a ligature because those edits can change the perceived spelling.
Use wordmark layout for line and width decisions and single-color versions for application review. Approval should preserve the actual brand name, not just the preferred style.

Frequently asked questions
Can knowing the name bias the check?
Yes. A reviewer may read what they expect rather than the actual shapes.
Can color be the only distinction?
Review a single-color version too.
Does a transcription check prove trademark availability?
No. It only checks visual reading.
