Assets & tasks / DECISION CHECK
Why is Google showing my old variant photo after I changed the product?
Compare the photo Google currently uses with the attributes customers currently buy. An old approved image can remain visible while a replacement is processed. That becomes a factual problem if you also changed the variant, packaging edition or included contents.
Record both versions, not just the new upload
Capture the processed item ID, current color and size attributes, landing-page selection and image history. Open the old and new assets beside the actual product reference. Mark what changed: an improved background is different from a blue bottle replacing a red bottle. The latter needs an identity check across every presentation surface.
Google documents a transition in which an old approved image may remain while a new image is reviewed, potentially for up to thirty days. This is not a guarantee of how long your specific replacement will take. Do not interpret the existence of an old thumbnail as proof that the current variant matches it.
Classify the mismatch
| Change | Risk during transition | Review decision |
|---|---|---|
| New background, same item | Presentation version differs | Check image status and wait as appropriate |
| New product color | Picture can identify the wrong variant | Resolve identity conflict before promotion |
| Different bundle contents | Old accessories imply incorrect inclusion | Reconcile offer and visible contents |
| New label artwork | Edition may be ambiguous | Confirm what will actually ship |
Keep product IDs stable unless your product-data rules require otherwise. Recreating an item to force processing can create additional history and mapping problems. Ask the platform or feed provider for the correct remedy when the old image materially misrepresents the offer.
Coordinate product and creative releases
For a fictional matte-black lamp replacing a brushed-silver edition, do not update just the title and assume the image will instantly follow. Prepare the new asset and mapping, verify the corresponding landing-page choice, and review the externally processed record before expanding ads. If a mismatch is active, use the destination’s available campaign or product controls to prevent a misleading promotion while you resolve it.
Close the transition deliberately
Record when the replacement was submitted, when it was crawled and which image now represents the item. Inspect the live offer from a shopper’s route, including the selected variant and cart. Itemlume does not synchronize catalog releases or monitor Google’s image transition. The creative approval should identify the final visible version instead of merely saying “new photo uploaded.”

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a blurry swatch image?
No. This is a version-and-identity mismatch in an external feed transition.
Should I create a new product ID immediately?
Do not use a new ID as a generic refresh trick; follow the product-data rules.
Can the old image be acceptable?
Only if it still truthfully represents the active offer and meets the destination requirements.
