Does a Submitted Midjourney Composition Keep Its Separate Layers?

Midjourney's Editor lets you arrange product and background images as separate layers before submission. Submitting a layered edit flattens the composition into a single layer. You can continue editing the resulting image, but you should not expect its original product and background layers to remain independently movable.

01 / DOES A SUBMITTED MIDJOURNEY COMPOSITION KEEP ITS SEPARATE LAYERS?

Identify which editor holds the working layers

A merchant may open an existing image from Create or Organize and expect to find the same controls used when combining several uploaded product photographs. Midjourney distinguishes its lightweight Editor from the full Edit page.

The full Edit page provides external-image editing and Layers. There, merchants can add images, move them, resize them, and change their stacking order. Layer selection also determines the intended editing scope.

Before assembling an advertisement, decide whether the source photographs need independent positioning. A perfume bottle, decorative ribbon, and background photograph may require separate adjustments during composition.

If those relationships still need approval, keep the arrangement editable before submitting the layered generation task. Do not confuse a visible composition with a permanently layered output.

Understand what submission changes

The important boundary occurs when the layered edit is submitted. Midjourney flattens the combined layers into one layer for the generated result.

Read the Editor controls within the actual model version. The current documentation says retexturing is built into Edit Model for V8.X; the separate legacy Retexture feature applies to V7 and earlier. A version-specific restyling control does not preserve or reconstruct the independent source layers of a submitted composite.

After submission, the result remains an image that can undergo further editing. However, selecting the bottle in that result does not restore the original bottle layer with its previous independent position and dimensions.

This does not establish that every earlier source or session record has been permanently deleted. The relevant limitation is the editing structure of the submitted composite.

If future independent movement is required, retain the separate source photographs and composition instructions outside the flattened result.

Check Layers and the version-specific Retexture section in the current Midjourney Editor documentation.

Record the Actual Version and Submission Boundary

Proposed handoff, not executed Midjourney editing or generation: record the actual editor and model version, source image identities, active layer selection and intended transparent area before submission. Keep the sources separately if future independent positioning is required.

If submission is performed, identify the resulting composite and inspect both the requested changes and product details. An image that can be edited again is not necessarily a layered master; do not pre-fill a successful generation or source-layer recovery.

04 / DOES A SUBMITTED MIDJOURNEY COMPOSITION KEEP ITS SEPARATE LAYERS?

Handoff the composite and its sources separately

Before submission, record which layers supply the product, environment, and decorative elements. Check their placement and which visible regions are intended for generation.

After submission, treat the resulting image as a composite deliverable. Review its appearance independently, without labeling it an editable layered master.

For campaigns requiring future product repositioning, deliver the original sources and composition notes alongside the approved composite.

Stop when the requested handoff requires independent layers that the submitted result no longer contains. Resolve the master-file requirement before promising another team reversible edits.

The goal is to preserve a workable production path, not to guarantee automatic recovery of flattened objects.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep editing a Midjourney image after submitting its layers?

Yes, the resulting image can be edited further. However, the original independent layers are flattened into a single composite layer.

Does flattening mean Midjourney permanently deletes every original source?

That conclusion is not supported. The documented behavior concerns the submitted result's layer structure, not guaranteed deletion of all earlier source or session records.
