Why Does Editing the OBS Text Field Leave My Product Offer Overlay Unchanged?
Check Read from file. OBS documents that this option reads text from the selected file instead of the Text property. If it is enabled, changing the manual text field is not the intended input route. Also check chat-log mode when only the ending of the file is visible.
Identify the text source and its input route
Start by naming the source that actually draws the offer. A visible price or promotion can be an image, browser content or a text source. This guide concerns the documented OBS text sources; it does not infer that every overlay has the same settings.
The OBS text-source guide distinguishes Text (GDI+) on Windows from Text (Freetype2) on macOS and Linux. Both document Read from file as an alternative to the manual Text property. Check the actual source and platform before borrowing a screenshot from another setup.
Separate input selection from visible line selection
For a manual-text workflow, verify the text input is the intended route. For a file-driven workflow, inspect the chosen file and its approved contents. Changing a different file with a similar name does not establish that the displayed source should change.
Chat-log mode has a separate purpose: it shows only the last specified lines of a text file. A file can contain the correct heading and conditions while the visible overlay exposes only its tail. This is a display-scope problem, not evidence that the earlier text was deleted.
Do not turn an offer overlay into an implied connection to live store prices. A local text source does not establish synchronization with inventory, checkout prices or another commerce system. Keep the approved wording and update responsibility explicit.
Illustrative exercise: wrong input versus hidden opening
Illustrative exercise — fictional product-show overlays, not OBS file-watch or rendering tests. Case A has Read from file enabled while its operator edits the manual Text field. Case B reads the intended file but chat-log mode displays only its ending.
For A, identify the selected input route and correct the approved source there, or intentionally choose a manual route if that is the brief. Do not repeatedly rewrite a field that is not being used.
For B, compare the file’s complete message with the lines exposed by the source. If the overlay must show the full offer, review whether chat-log mode and its line count suit that requirement. Do not shorten away necessary conditions just to fit the current setting.
Read the complete published message
Review the actual overlay at its delivery size, including the price, product identity and any required accompanying wording. If the content is still missing after the input route is correct, record that observation and investigate the source’s framing and display settings separately.
Maintain a small handoff record: source name, operating system, manual or file input, selected file identity, chat-log state and the approved visible message. This is an editorial record, not a built-in approval or automatic update feature.
Retain the original source file and test in a controlled setup before relying on the message in a live product presentation. No particular update latency, plugin behavior or screen-reader result is established by this guide.
Illustrative exercise — offer overlay input contract
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Fictional case | Input route | Line-display state | Diagnostic decision | Actual message review |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: Manual edits ignored | File input selected | Any relevant state | Inspect the selected file or intentionally change input route | Pending approved price and wording check |
| B: Opening terms absent | Correct file input | Chat-log mode exposes file tail | Review whether tail-only display matches the message brief | Pending full offer and conditions at delivery size |

Frequently asked questions
Which text is used when Read from file is enabled?
The documented option uses the text file instead of the manual Text property. Confirm the selected source and file.
Does showing only the last few lines mean the file lost its first lines?
Not necessarily. Chat-log mode intentionally exposes the ending lines. Compare the source file and visible output before changing the message.
