PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
How should I reuse one OBS display capture across several product-demo scenes?
Create the display capture once and reference that existing source in the other scenes. OBS documents one Display Capture source per display. Several scenes showing the same monitor do not require several separately created captures. Verify the source identity as well as the visible picture so that similar names do not hide separate configurations.
Separate the scene from the captured display
A product walkthrough may move between a full demonstration, a branded introduction and a concluding scene. Those are scene choices. If all of them need the same monitor, the capture target is still one display. OBS’s display-capture guide explicitly recommends references to the existing source for this arrangement.
Name the existing capture clearly enough to identify its purpose and display. Before adding anything, inspect what the current scene already uses. A source called Demo screen and another called Demo screen copy may look identical while leaving the team unsure which one is intended. The correction is to establish a known shared source, not to infer identity from the resulting pixels.
Reference the known source in each required scene
Keep the approved scene setup and make changes in a working copy. In the destination scene, use the installed OBS interface’s option to reference the existing display-capture source. Verify that you selected the known capture rather than the option to create another source. This guide does not prescribe an undocumented shortcut or assume that every platform presents identical capture controls.
Repeat that identity check for each scene needing the monitor. The official recommendation concerns source reuse; it is not a promise that every scene’s final composition will automatically match the creative brief. Review the actual scene output separately, including brand graphics that may cover a product detail.
Illustrative exercise: shared monitor or a different requirement?
In fictional case A, the product demonstration and closing scene both need the same application shown on the same monitor. Record the existing capture’s identity, reference it from both scenes, and switch between them. The check is whether each scene uses the intended source and presents the intended demonstration, not whether two independently created captures happen to look alike during one moment.
In case B, the closing scene needs a static approved product photograph rather than the live monitor. That is a different input requirement. Do not create another display capture merely to hold a screenshot-like ending. Return to the scene brief and choose an appropriate asset source for the approved still; source reuse should follow the desired content, not become a rule that every scene must show the monitor.
Keep capture scope separate from source reuse
Display Capture covers the monitor. Referencing it in another scene does not turn it into window-only capture. OBS documents separate platform-specific capture mechanisms, and its macOS cropping note warns that windows overlapping a cropped region can still be captured. Do not apply that historical platform-specific property as a universal instruction for every current system.
Approve the setup when the scenes that need the monitor reference the intended existing source and their complete output matches the brief. If the required input is a particular window, a still image or another display, resolve that requirement separately. No OBS session was executed for this illustrative exercise, and this topology check does not certify recording quality or publishing compatibility.

| Scene | Required input | Known source identity | Reference decision | Output review |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: product demonstration | Live monitor | Approved display capture | Reference existing capture | Required product detail remains visible |
| B: ending | Approved still photograph | Separate approved asset | Choose the still-input workflow rather than another capture | Ending matches the brief |

Frequently asked questions
Do several scenes require several new captures of the same display?
No. OBS recommends referencing the existing Display Capture source when the display is needed in multiple scenes.
Does referencing the source change a monitor capture into a window capture?
No. Source reuse and capture scope are separate decisions; verify which input the scene actually requires.
