How to show an open and closed product without inventing its mechanism
A different state requires different evidence. A closed lid photograph can establish the outside, but it may not establish the hinge, interior or detached parts. Prepare authoritative views of each needed state and approve those states separately before combining them in a product story.
Separate state from viewpoint
An illustrative travel case has a hinged lid and an interior divider. Viewing the closed case from above changes the viewpoint; opening the lid changes the product state. The second image introduces construction that the first view may never show. A convincing hinge generated from a closed reference is still an unsupported hinge.
List the states the shopper actually needs: closed for identification, open for contents and perhaps folded for storage. Avoid requesting every possible position merely to enlarge a gallery. Each state should resolve a distinct question and correspond to the same sold model, edition and included components.
Identify what each state must prove
| State | Evidence to obtain | Review boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Closed case | Exterior and closure photograph | Correct lid, latch and proportions |
| Open hinged lid | Actual hinge and interior view | Lid stays attached at the right connection |
| Detached cap | Real cap and opening views | No fictional hinge or extra seal |
| Folded storage position | Photograph and approved product information | No invented joint or unsupported endpoint |
Record which parts remain attached and which are removed. The position of a lid alone does not reveal its connection type. If a reference shows a divider separately, establish whether it is supplied, removable and appropriate to this edition before placing it in the open case.
Prepare matched endpoint photographs
Photograph the case in the required states with enough shared detail to confirm identity. Keep the same variant, finish and component count. For an open view, show the lid connection and interior clearly; a tight crop that hides both may be attractive but supplies little evidence for the requested state.
Shopify's ecommerce photography guide discusses photographing useful product angles. Apply that evidence-led approach to the actual endpoints here. Matching endpoint photographs do not prove every intermediate movement, opening force or durability result. Use real demonstration material or authoritative documentation when those properties become the message.
Create candidates with one state priority
In Product images, upload the matching evidence and identify which state the selected image should show. Describe the relevant connections and contents in ordinary product terms. Start with one clear open or closed view rather than a crowded composition that asks the generator to reconcile several overlapping versions.
Check that the open candidate belongs to the same case as the closed view. Inspect hinge count, latch location, divider placement and the lid's relationship with the base. If the result adds an internal tray, removes a joint or changes the opening type, reject that state even when the exterior still resembles the source.
Approve states before implying a sequence
An approved closed image and an approved open image can support a gallery comparison. They do not automatically form accurate step-by-step instructions. If you later arrange them into an opening sequence, verify the order and any intermediate condition with the actual product. Avoid arrows that imply a detachable lid when the real lid is hinged.
Keep the state evidence register with the approved outputs. When an interior cannot be established, show the verified exterior and obtain the missing photograph. Itemlume can explore product visuals; it does not infer mechanical truth, validate an operating range or simulate a supplier-approved folding path from an attractive starting image.

Frequently asked questions
Can a closed photo establish the inside of a case?
Usually not. Obtain an authoritative interior view when the inside is part of the intended image or buying decision.
Do two endpoint photos prove how the mechanism moves?
No. They establish visible states. Intermediate motion, operation and performance need appropriate additional evidence.
Should I put open and closed versions in one generated image?
Only if the comparison is useful and each version remains accurate and distinguishable. Approve individual state evidence first.
