Packaging studio / QUESTION GUIDE

Why should a packaging concept mark glue areas separately from artwork?

Ask the supplier to identify joining and adhesive areas on the actual template, then keep them separate from decorative artwork decisions. An AI flat concept does not determine which surfaces can be printed or finished. Use the concept to express the visual direction and the supplier drawing to control construction.

01 / WHY SHOULD A PACKAGING CONCEPT MARK GLUE AREAS SEPARATELY FROM ARTWORK?

Obtain the supplier’s marked template

Request the current template for the exact structure and size. Ask which areas serve joining, folding and visible presentation. Do not assume that every flap is a printable panel or copy another pack’s exclusions. Record the supplier’s naming convention so the artwork reviewer can identify the same region.

For an illustrative folding carton, a narrow side extension may be a join flap rather than a fifth decorative panel. A generated flat layout can make it look like a convenient place for text, but the assembled package may conceal it.

02 / WHY SHOULD A PACKAGING CONCEPT MARK GLUE AREAS SEPARATELY FROM ARTWORK?

Create separate review layers

LayerControlled byDesign treatment
Visible artworkApproved visual briefBrand and product communication
Join areasSupplier templateFollow supplied exclusions
Cut and fold linesStructure drawingDo not infer from concept
Finish areasSupplier processConfirm suitability separately

Keep line meanings documented. A decorative border in a concept is not a production cut line. Avoid giving a printer a flattened image whose marks cannot be distinguished.

03 / WHY SHOULD A PACKAGING CONCEPT MARK GLUE AREAS SEPARATELY FROM ARTWORK?

Use the flat concept as a communication aid

In Packaging studio, describe the packaging type and visual hierarchy. Review the generated flat concept for intended panel roles, not exact manufacturing geometry. Transfer approved graphics into the supplier’s template in an appropriate external editor. Itemlume does not produce a supplier-validated dieline or adhesive exclusion file.

If the concept places a barcode, claim or brand mark in a hidden join area, relocate it in the final artwork and revise the presentation image. The flat concept and assembled view should communicate the same approved design.

04 / WHY SHOULD A PACKAGING CONCEPT MARK GLUE AREAS SEPARATELY FROM ARTWORK?

Confirm the assembled result

Inspect a sample with the supplier. Check whether joining hides important artwork or introduces unexpected seams into text. Record the approved template revision and artwork revision together. If the supplier changes the structure, reopen the affected placement decisions.

Use concept-versus-dieline guidance and fold review. The deliverable is a marked supplier handoff with clear responsibilities, not a visually impressive flat image mistaken for production data.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can AI identify the correct glue area?

Do not rely on it; use the supplier’s actual template.

Is a flat concept a print file?

No. Develop exact artwork on the approved production template.

What if the structure changes?

Review joining, visible panels and artwork placement again.
