Packaging studio / SCENARIO GUIDE
How to brief sustainable-looking packaging without unsupported claims
Describe the visual direction separately from environmental facts. A kraft-colored box is a style choice; recycled content, recyclability and compostability are claims that need evidence about the actual material, construction and intended market. Do not let a generated badge supply that evidence.
Separate appearance from material specification
A pale brown surface with restrained printing can suggest a simple packaging direction. It does not tell you the fiber source, coating or recycled percentage. Record the proposed board, finishes, adhesives and any insert material in a supplier information sheet rather than inferring them from the render.
Keep decorative leaves or nature imagery distinct from factual badges. A generator may add an eco symbol when given a broad sustainability brief. Reject unsupported certification marks and ask for a visual concept without claims until the real packaging evidence is available.
Build a claim evidence sheet
| Proposed wording | Evidence to obtain | Do not infer from |
|---|---|---|
| Recycled content | Supplier data for the actual material | Brown color or paper texture |
| Recyclable | Applicable material and local handling information | A generic recycling icon |
| Compostable | Relevant verified specification and conditions | A leaf illustration |
| Certified material | Valid authorization for the actual product claim | A generated seal |
Packhelp’s sustainability hub distinguishes several material and labeling terms. That terminology can help organize questions, but another supplier’s program does not establish your own pack’s eligibility. Obtain evidence for your actual supply chain.
Use Packaging studio for the visual direction
- Choose the proposed structure and describe the visual material treatment.
- Provide verified facts separately from words used only to describe style.
- Keep unsupported environmental badges and percentages out of the design requirements.
- Review the generated panels for invented claims, marks or technical material statements.
If a factual line is not ready, reserve a clear area for later approved wording instead of generating a plausible placeholder claim. Keep your draft concept identifiable as a draft. Do not publish it as the final pack while an important material decision remains unresolved.
Review wording and production together
Ask the supplier and appropriate reviewer to confirm the final claim for the product and market. A coating, window, adhesive or mixed-material insert may change how the complete packaging should be described. Confirm that the final artwork uses the authorized wording and mark, if any.
Inspect the physical sample and the assembled packaging before release. Remove claims that belong to a different board or earlier prototype. Itemlume does not assess environmental compliance or certify materials; its role here is to help explore and review a visual direction without inventing substantiation.

Frequently asked questions
Does kraft appearance mean recycled packaging?
No. Appearance does not establish recycled content or the material’s actual specification.
Can I ask AI to add a certification seal?
Only use a genuine authorized mark in final artwork after verifying its permitted use. A generated seal is not certification.
Are recyclable and compostable interchangeable?
No. They describe different properties and conditions. Verify the applicable claim for the actual packaging and market.
