PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
What should I recheck when replacing one product variant photo in a reusable Photoroom design?
When you replace one product variant in a reusable Photoroom design, inspect the new subject as a new fit, not as a drop-in equivalent. Confirm its identity and full silhouette, then reassess the inherited shadow and scene. Keep the approved original intact and make the replacement on a separate test copy; retain the treatment only if the product edge, base shadow, and label all pass visual inspection.
Separate the template from the test
In Photoroom, a custom template can use a Replaceable Subject layer for the incoming main subject. On the web version, template editing and making a one-off design are separate contexts. For a controlled check, preserve the approved design or template and test the incoming variant on a copy or separate derived design. Do not assume that editing the original template changes designs made from it earlier.
Use the new variant photo as the replacement input, not as evidence that the old composition still fits. The subject may have a different height, width, base shape, or label position even when the packaging is otherwise familiar.
- Identify the intended variant from the product and label details before judging scene effects.
- Apply the replacement to the test design and compare the complete visible subject with the source photo.
- Keep the approved version available for reference; do not overwrite it during diagnosis.
Illustrative exercise: short bottle to tall bottle
Illustrative exercise, not a reported Photoroom test: a merchant has an approved design showing a short bottle with a soft base shadow. The replacement is a taller bottle with a narrower shoulder and a label placed higher. First check that the replacement is the intended variant and that the full cap, body, and base are visible. Then inspect whether the shadow still meets the bottle base naturally and whether any edge or label detail from the short bottle remains.
Call the original scene treatment A and the replacement treatment B only after defining the comparison: A is the approved short-bottle composition; B is the test copy with the tall-bottle subject. If B shows the whole correct bottle and the shadow meets its base without a visible remnant of the old subject, continue to final-file review. If the bottle is clipped, the base appears to float, or an old label or edge remains, stop approval and revise the subject fit or shadow treatment in the test copy. If identity is uncertain, resolve that first; scene polish cannot validate the wrong variant.
Retain or recalibrate the scene
A replacement can inherit a scene treatment that suited the former silhouette. Judge effects against the new product boundary: a shadow may sit too wide, miss the base, or make a narrow product look detached. A crop or canvas may also leave too little room around a taller item. These are visual checks, not automatic guarantees that the template will adapt correctly.
If the cutout edge is clean and the shadow still anchors the new base, retain those parts of the scene. If the edge is incomplete or old subject details remain, correct the subject replacement before tuning the shadow. If the silhouette is sound but the shadow no longer fits, recalibrate that scene effect on the test copy and compare again. This sequence is editorial diagnosis: it isolates whether the failure comes from identity, cutout, or inherited treatment.
- Inspect the top, sides, and base of the cutout against the background.
- Check the shadow where it meets the new base and around the product’s outline.
- If the product is clipped, adjust the composition or canvas and inspect the actual final file; resizing a canvas or expanding a generated background does not necessarily rescale the original subject detail.
Check the relevant Photoroom workflow
For a web custom template, the documented workflow is to finish the design and return Home to save, then use the design’s dotted menu and Turn into template. In the template editor, select the intended layer, enable Replaceable Subject, and return Home to save. Applying the template to an image imports a new photo subject. Use in batch depends on access, so do not assume it is available to every workspace.
Mobile uses Content and its own menu labels; do not follow web labels as though they were universal. Resize also has different entry points, including while editing, on upload, for generated images, and in Batch. Confirm the actual client and inspect the exported file rather than treating a canvas change as proof that the product itself was scaled.
Approve on visible evidence
Approval means the correct variant is shown in full, the cutout has no leftover edge or label from the prior subject, and the shadow meets the new base naturally. Check the finished file at its intended use size, since the subject and scene must remain clear there too. If any condition fails, keep the approved original and continue revising only the test version. Record what failed and what you changed so the next replacement starts with a useful diagnosis, not an assumed reusable fit.

Frequently asked questions
Does changing the template update designs made from it earlier?
The documented behavior does not establish retroactive updates to prior derived designs. Treat earlier outputs as separate and inspect or revise them individually where needed.
Can Photoroom guarantee the new cutout and shadow will fit?
No such guarantee is supported by the supplied product facts. Inspect the subject boundary and base shadow after replacement, and revise the test design when either fails.
Can I use the same template steps on mobile?
The mobile workflow uses Content and its own menu labels. The supplied web instructions should not be presented as universal mobile navigation.
