PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
How can I detect a cutout defect that only becomes visible after adding a Photoroom shadow?
Review the product cutout twice: first without the shadow, then with the selected shadow over a contrasting background. If an edge problem exists only after the shadow is applied, inspect whether the shadow is concealing the cutout, duplicating its outline, or creating a false border. Keep the approved original and perform the review on a test copy.
Set Up A Controlled Review
Use one product image and make a test copy before changing the design. Choose two distinguishable inputs for a small review: Input 1 has a narrow, high-contrast feature such as a handle or pointed corner; Input 2 has a broad, rounded edge. These are review inputs, not claims about how Photoroom will process every image.
Illustrative exercise: inspect Input 1 before applying a shadow and note whether its narrow feature is clean against a contrasting background. Then apply the selected shadow and inspect the same region. Inspect Input 2 in the same order. The exercise passes when the cutout baseline is clean and the shadow does not conceal a defect, duplicate the product contour, or create a false outline. Stop the review when you cannot distinguish whether a dark edge belongs to the product or the shadow; change the background or remove the shadow temporarily before deciding.
- Preserve the approved original and work only on the test copy.
- Use a contrasting background for the inspection so product pixels and nearby shadow pixels are easier to distinguish.
- Record the exact edge region being reviewed, such as the handle, base, corner, or narrow gap.
Inspect Without The Shadow
Begin with the product cutout before applying the shadow effect or generated shadow. Inspect adjacent product regions, not only the outer silhouette. Look for missing product pixels, leftover background, uneven transparency, clipped details, or a boundary that changes thickness along a simple surface.
This is the baseline. If the cutout already fails here, a shadow is not the corrective mechanism. Repair or replace the cutout on the test copy first, then repeat the review. A clean baseline means the later comparison can focus on what the selected shadow changes.
- View the cutout against a contrasting background.
- Check narrow features, corners, openings, and the product-to-ground contact area.
- Mark any defect visible before the shadow is applied; do not attribute that defect to the shadow.
Apply And Compare
Apply the intended Photoroom shadow and review the same marked regions again. Photoroom documents ordinary Shadow settings separately from AI Shadows. Their documented roles differ, so identify whether you are reviewing the ordinary Shadow settings or the generated AI Shadows result rather than treating every shadow as the same object.
For AI Shadows, the output is generated from the source, settings, and prompt. Do not assume it is an independently editable shadow layer. Compare the result visually with the no-shadow baseline. A defect that appears only now may be shadow-generated; a defect that was already present belongs to the cutout baseline.
- Review the same edge region with the shadow active.
- Compare the product boundary, not merely the overall realism of the image.
- If the shadow hides a missing edge, duplicates the product outline, or creates a dark rim outside the product, reject that shadow result for this image.
- If the edge remains clean, continue to the alternate-background check.
| Observed change after shadow | Likely review finding | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A missing edge is no longer visible | The shadow may be concealing a cutout defect | Remove or disable the shadow on the test copy and correct the cutout baseline |
| A second line follows the product boundary | The shadow may be duplicating or outlining the edge | Reject that shadow result and reassess the selected shadow |
| The boundary is unchanged and the shadow stays outside it | No edge defect is exposed by this comparison | Continue with the alternate-background check |
Use The Acceptance Test
Change the contrasting background and inspect the same boundary again. This is an editorial audit recommendation, not a documented Photoroom feature claim. The purpose is to expose an edge that looked clean only because the first background had similar brightness or color.
Accept the result only when the cutout remains clean without the shadow and the shadow does not cover, duplicate, or outline the product edge. If the defect is visible without the shadow, repair or replace the cutout on the test copy and repeat the comparison. If the baseline is clean but the shadow conceals, duplicates, or outlines the edge, reject or revise that shadow result. Do not use Retouch as proof that unchanged product detail was preserved: Photoroom documents Retouch as acting on selected image regions and prompts, including erasing unwanted objects or adding new ones.
- Repeat the inspection over a second contrasting background.
- Compare the marked edge region with the baseline and shadow-active views.
- Record pass only when both acceptance conditions hold; otherwise record the specific failure and stop approval.
Scope And Records
Photoroom documentation distinguishes ordinary Shadow settings from AI Shadows, and AI Shadow preset options can depend on the client. The None preset is documented for the Web App, so do not assume that every client exposes the same choices or controls. This guide does not infer identical behavior for web, mobile, or other application versions.
Keep a short manual record of the baseline view, shadow-active view, alternate-background view, affected edge region, and decision. That record makes the next action explicit: correct the cutout, reject the shadow result, or approve the test copy for the next workflow step.

Frequently asked questions
Should I judge the shadow only on the final background?
No. Review the cutout without the shadow, with the shadow, and over a second contrasting background. A final background can conceal a defect or make a shadow-created outline harder to identify.
Can I treat an AI Shadow as a separate editable layer?
No assumption should be made. The documented AI Shadow process generates an image from the source, settings, and prompt. Review the generated result as an output rather than assuming it is an independently editable shadow layer.
What if the edge is already defective before the shadow?
Record it as a cutout baseline failure. Correct or replace the cutout on the test copy, then repeat the shadow comparison. The shadow should not be used to hide the original defect.
