DELIVERY TROUBLESHOOTING / Assets & tasks

Why is the product missing when my teammate opens the PSD?

A linked Smart Object depends on another file. A PSD that opens correctly on your computer may therefore be incomplete on a teammate’s computer. For a self-contained handoff, embed the approved linked object in a delivery copy.

01 / WHY IS THE PRODUCT MISSING WHEN MY TEAMMATE OPENS THE PSD?

Work through the cause

  1. Keep the editable master and create a clearly named handoff copy. Inspect product layers for external links and missing-file warnings.
  2. Use the Smart Object embedding command on approved linked images. Check the document again after saving; do not assume a rendered preview proves the source is available.
  3. Give the recipient the handoff copy and ask them to open and edit it without access to your original asset folder.
02 / WHY IS THE PRODUCT MISSING WHEN MY TEAMMATE OPENS THE PSD?

A concrete case (illustrative)

Illustrative case: a lifestyle PSD displays a cached bottle preview, but editing the bottle asks for a file on the designer’s desktop. Embedding the approved bottle in a separate delivery PSD resolves that external dependency without reorganizing the original production folder.

03 / WHY IS THE PRODUCT MISSING WHEN MY TEAMMATE OPENS THE PSD?

Acceptance and next action

Pass only after the recipient can open the product contents, not merely see the flattened composite. Fonts, linked items inside nested documents and other dependencies need their own checks. Embedding is a file-portability choice; it does not license an asset or verify product accuracy.
