Product images / PRODUCTION GUIDE
Why do handles and openings disappear in AI product images?
An opening is part of a product’s construction even when the pixels inside it show the background. A mug handle can become a solid loop, or a chair back can lose a gap, while the overall image still looks convincing. Check which areas contain material and which let the scene show through before approving the candidate.
Classify the area inside the outline
Start with an unobstructed photograph of the exact item. Look inside its outer silhouette: a handle surrounds empty space, a transparent window contains material, and a dark recess may contain a real surface. These areas can look similar in a small image, but they require different treatment. A clean outer edge alone cannot establish that the internal construction survived.
For a hypothetical ceramic mug, identify the handle attachment at the top and bottom, the opening between handle and cup, and the cup rim. Use another real view if the first angle hides an attachment. Do not assume every dark patch should disappear during background cleanup; some patches describe depth or an actual component.
Make an opening map before editing
Draw or describe a simple map outside Itemlume. Number the openings that matter to identification, then record the material around each one and the background visible through it. The aim is to preserve relationships rather than copy one literal background color. A new scene can change the visible background without changing how the opening connects to the rest of the item.
| Area | Real relationship | Hold the image when |
|---|---|---|
| Mug handle | Two attachments around one open gap | Gap becomes a ceramic panel |
| Chair back | Separate rails with visible spaces | Rails merge into a solid back |
| Basket grip | Opening bounded by the actual rim | Grip becomes a printed dark shape |
Treat the table as a review aid, not an automatic detector.
Locate the stage that introduced the change
Compare the untouched photograph, any externally prepared cutout, and the generated candidate. If the opening exists in the photograph but disappears in the cutout, investigate the mask. If both inputs preserve it and the candidate fills it, reject the generated construction. If the photograph itself conceals the relationship, obtain better evidence rather than interpreting the output as recovery.
Photoroom distinguishes cutout editing from Retouch: the former hides or reveals existing pixels, while the latter generates pixels. That distinction helps choose an external repair. Restoring a removed attachment and inventing an unseen attachment are different tasks. Itemlume does not currently provide dedicated cutout, restore or retouch controls.
Request a candidate with inspectable gaps
In Product images, supply the authoritative item photographs and state which openings and attachments must remain visible. Begin with a simple background whose lines do not confuse the construction. Describe the requested image as a generated concept that needs comparison, rather than a mechanically exact reconstruction of the item.
Inspect both ends of each connecting part, then follow the space between them. For the mug, the new background should continue through the handle gap in a plausible way. Reject a candidate that preserves a dark handle-shaped patch but removes the actual opening. A plausible shadow cannot substitute for the missing geometry.
Handoff a construction exception
Keep a crop of the source beside the rejected crop and name the relationship that failed: lower attachment missing, opening filled, or two rails merged. This gives an external editor or the next reviewer a concrete target. If correcting the image requires inventing a hidden surface, request a real view instead.
Use the transparent material guide when material transmits light, and the missing-angle guide when the construction is undocumented. Finish by checking the approved file at its normal display size. A preserved opening that becomes unreadable in the final crop still fails its communication job.

Frequently asked questions
Is every dark area inside a handle background?
No. Confirm whether it is empty space, a shadow, a recess or actual material using the real item.
Can Itemlume repair a cutout mask?
Dedicated cutout and mask-repair tools are not currently connected. Prepare any exact correction in an external editor.
Should I generate a missing attachment?
Do not treat a generated attachment as evidence. Obtain a photograph when that construction matters.
