Product videos / DEEP-DIVE GUIDE
How to borrow a reference video’s structure without copying its claims
Describe the reference as a sequence of communication jobs: identify the item, direct attention to one detail, then resolve the message. Keep another brand’s product facts out of that sequence. Itemlume accepts your written observations; entering a link does not make this workbench watch, clone or replace a reference video.
Watch for the question each moment answers
On the first viewing, write what you understand before writing how the film looks. An opening may answer what the object is. A middle section may show where a control sits. The ending may leave a recognizable package beside a next step. Those jobs are more transferable than the exact camera angle, actor or catchphrase.
On a second viewing, note the transition between jobs. Does attention move through camera movement, a changing highlight, an edit or a caption? Separate these mechanisms. If the reference depends on a cut to another location, do not describe that change as a simple movement inside your own continuous shot. The observation can still help a later external edit.
Translate the structure through your own product
Imagine a fragrance advertisement that moves from a textured cap to a complete bottle, followed by a discount card. A reusable principle is detail followed by recognition. For a desk speaker, that could become attention on an existing grille followed by a stable view of the speaker. The fragrance ingredients, cap motion and discount have no role in the speaker brief.
| Reference observation | Possible transfer | Do not transfer |
|---|---|---|
| A detail creates curiosity | Emphasize a real visible detail on your item | An absent feature or another product’s mechanism |
| A clear closing product view | Keep your exact item recognizable at the end | The other brand mark or packaging |
| A caption explains a benefit | Reserve later space for your verified copy | The reference claim, price or testimonial |
This is an original adaptation exercise, not a claim that matching a successful ad’s sequence will reproduce its performance. Audience, offer and distribution can all differ.
Write a short structure note with explicit boundaries
The optional reference-structure field in Product videos accepts up to 600 characters. A useful client note might read: start with recognition, let one light change draw attention to the supplied metal surface, finish on the complete object; borrow the viewing order only. Keep the actual product facts in their own field so a reviewer knows where claims came from.
Avoid copying a transcript into the field and asking for the brand name to be changed. Transcripts can contain unsupported promises, spoken experiences and promotions. They also leave unclear which visual decisions matter. Your note should remain understandable to someone who has never seen the reference.
Check the plan against the available production route
Mark any reference moment that needs an absent person, a second product state or an unseen rear view. Decide whether to prepare a different first image, simplify the idea or save that moment for a separately produced clip. A structure is useful only when the planned footage can support it.
Billo’s briefing guidance makes a related operational point: essential requirements belong in the brief rather than only in an outside conversation or link. Apply that clarity principle here without assuming the two products have the same generation features. Billo’s campaign briefing guide.
Compare the adapted result with your brief, not only the reference
Ask whether your product is correctly represented and whether attention follows the intended order. A result can resemble the reference closely while introducing the wrong accessories. It can also differ visually while serving the same communication goal more honestly.
Keep a short record of what you deliberately retained, changed and excluded. For the speaker example, retain detail-to-recognition, change the material emphasis and reject the fragrance offer. Review original lettering, quantity and visible construction throughout the finished clip. That record gives the next variation a clear starting point without turning another advertiser’s creative into your product evidence.

Frequently asked questions
Can I paste a video URL for automatic analysis?
The current reference-notes field is for your own written observations. It does not automatically analyze a URL or replace products in an uploaded video.
Can I use the reference’s benefit claim if I change the product name?
Only use claims independently established for your actual product. The reference’s wording is not evidence.
What if the reference needs several separate locations?
Treat those location changes as an external editing plan or simplify the idea. The current generated shot should not be briefed as an automatic multi-scene edit.
