Product images / SCENARIO GUIDE
How to keep black and reflective products readable in AI images
Separate the product from the background with readable contour light, and use reflections to describe the material. Increasing brightness everywhere can erase a black finish just as easily as a dark scene can hide it. Review the object’s controls before approving the mood.
Use the reflection as product evidence
A black headphone cup may contain matte plastic, woven padding and a polished control ring. Those materials need different appearances. Capture a clear reference where the ring reflects a broad light area while the padding retains its texture. Avoid a bright spot that hides a button or creates the appearance of a new opening.
For a glossy speaker, record the real port and grille pattern in a separate detail view. The generator can invent plausible electronics, so a recognizable category is not enough. Enter the actual product configuration and avoid asking for premium metal if the original housing is plastic.
Diagnose readability before changing color
| Symptom | Creative adjustment | Product check |
|---|---|---|
| Black item disappears | Use a slightly lighter surface or edge light | Black stays black rather than turning gray |
| Glossy finish looks flat | Use one broad, controlled reflection | No invented mirror or extra object |
| Controls vanish | Simplify the lighting and framing | Buttons and ports match the source |
| Texture looks noisy | Use a closer, calmer detail view | Padding or grille retains its real pattern |

Create one controlled electronics image
- Open Product images with the exact product views and factual features.
- Choose a studio or simple scene image and keep the person option off for the first test.
- Describe the separate finishes and the feature that must remain visible.
- Generate one result, compare the product, then try a different background tone if needed.
A dramatic rim can look like a colored LED strip. If the product has no such feature, reject that interpretation. Similarly, a lens flare should not appear to emerge from a port that has no light. The setting must not add an implied function to the item.
Test the actual destination crop
View the image in a small collection-card crop as well as at full resolution. Inspect the outer silhouette, controls and label. If the item becomes an indistinct shape when reduced, make a simpler identification image rather than relying on a decorative campaign shot for every placement.
Keep an approved close view for material and one wider view for the complete object. Do not combine black-on-black styling with dense claims and a tiny product. The practical goal is a shopper who can recognize what is sold and see the feature they are evaluating.

Frequently asked questions
Should I make black products lighter?
Light the contour and separate the background first. Changing the material color can misrepresent the variant.
Can AI add reflections accurately?
It can generate plausible reflections, but it can also create false surfaces or features. Compare the result with your reference.
Is a dark campaign image suitable for the main listing photo?
Check the specific channel and placement. Keep a clear identification photograph when the decorative treatment hides the item.
