Which way should my bottle labels come off the roll?
A label can be printed correctly yet arrive on a roll that does not suit the applicator. Agree on how it leaves the roll and meets the container.
Start with the application method
A fictional seller, Hearth Drop, applies its first bottle labels by hand and later hires a fulfillment partner with a labeling machine. The existing front graphic still looks correct, but the machine needs the label supplied in a particular orientation. Ask who will apply it, which equipment they will use and who approves the roll specification.
Avery distinguishes hand application from machine or dispenser application when explaining unwind direction. Its guidance makes machine compatibility the reason to confirm the direction. Do not choose an orientation from a pleasing mockup or assume the previous hand-applied batch establishes the next production setup.
Draw the label as the operator will receive it
Use the approved flat label and mark its top, bottom and reading direction. Ask the operator to show which edge must leave the roll first and which side of the material faces outward on the roll. Confirm both relationships together; a drawing that identifies only “top” can still leave the winding ambiguous.
Attach the supplier’s own orientation diagram and selection name to the order. If two vendors use numbered choices, compare their diagrams instead of assuming that equal numbers mean equal directions. For Hearth Drop, the shared artifact is an annotated label-and-roll sketch approved by the printing supplier and the application operator.
Confirm the remaining roll requirements separately
- Have the operator confirm the label’s intended position on the actual bottle.
- Ask the printer and operator to agree on the needed roll and liner specifications.
- Include the confirmed orientation diagram with the artwork revision.
- Request the agreed sample or setup check before authorizing the larger run.
This is a handoff checklist, not a universal machine specification. Core size, roll size, liner and spacing requirements depend on the equipment and supplier. Keep unknown values provisional. Do not infer them from the bottle’s dimensions or use a generic article to override the operator’s stated requirements.
Inspect the trial from roll to container
For the illustrative trial, ask the operator to demonstrate how the supplied label leaves the roll and reaches the bottle. Review the reading direction, label position and whether the approved front faces the expected way. Record the sample roll reference and any correction. A label turned around in a screenshot is not evidence that the roll itself has been supplied correctly.
Use Packaging studio for visual placement discussions; Itemlume does not calculate or configure applicator settings. The shelf-facing guide decides what shoppers see after application. This guide decides how the label reaches that position during production. Preserve the operator-approved diagram with the final order.
Use the production artwork handoff worksheet as a manual review record. Sample rows are fictional. It does not connect to, import into or modify an external store or production machine.

Frequently asked questions
Does label reading direction determine the unwind choice by itself?
No. Confirm the leading edge and winding with the actual application equipment and supplier diagram.
Can I reuse another printer’s numbered unwind choice?
Compare the actual diagrams and get confirmation. Do not assume vendors use the same numbering convention.
Does Itemlume configure labeling machinery?
No. It provides packaging concepts; the operator and printing supplier approve roll and machine requirements.
