Product images / PRODUCTION GUIDE
Why does Shopify crop the product when the original image is complete?
A complete downloaded image can lose its handle, feet or cap when a storefront fits it into a different display box. Compare the original file with the exact Shopify placement before regenerating. Identify the section, theme behavior and essential product boundaries, then choose a crop, focal point or alternate composition that the placement can support.
Verify that the product is intact in the file
Open the downloaded original outside the storefront and confirm that the missing part is present. Note its width, height and the space around the product. Then inspect the exact store location where the loss occurs: collection card, product gallery, slideshow or banner. Two placements using the same image can apply different display shapes.
Use a hypothetical tall travel bag with a top handle and visible feet. If both survive the original but the collection card cuts off the handle, treat that as a display investigation. If the original already omits the handle, the theme cannot restore it. Keep these failures separate so the image creator and storefront operator receive the right task.
Record the display contract for one placement
Write the theme name, version, section, device width and section sizing option in an external note. Include the image ratio and the landmarks that must remain visible. This is more useful than a general request to make every image square. A square file can still be cropped by a section whose shape is portrait or wide.
| Record | Example observation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Original file | Handle and feet visible | Confirms the source is complete |
| Section | Collection card crops to fill | Locates the display decision |
| Device | Handle missing on a narrow screen | Identifies the affected layout |
| Required landmarks | Top handle plus lower feet | Defines what a fix must preserve |
The observations are hypothetical; copy the actual values from your store.
Use focal points within their real limits
Shopify documents focal points and theme-dependent cropping. A focal point identifies one important area, and compatibility depends on the theme and version. Check the current documentation for your theme rather than assuming a third-party theme follows the same behavior. One point cannot by itself express that two widely separated product ends must both remain visible.
For the bag, moving the focal point upward may preserve the handle while losing the feet. Inspect the entire required region after the change. Shopify also notes that an image’s focal point applies where that same image is reused. Check other placements before accepting a local improvement that creates a new crop problem elsewhere.
Choose the smallest change that answers the problem
Inspect whether the affected section offers a different image fit or sizing option. Where supported, a layout that adapts to the image may preserve more content. Otherwise prepare a composition whose ratio and surrounding space suit that placement. Verify the result in the actual theme rather than relying on an editing canvas that does not reproduce its behavior.
Use Product images for a new generated concept only when the composition itself needs to change. Keep the same authoritative product references and request clear margins around the required landmarks. Itemlume does not connect to Shopify or change its theme settings. Exact cropping and storefront configuration belong to your external editing and publishing workflow.
Close the issue with evidence from both layouts
Preview the affected placement at narrow and wide screen sizes, then inspect every other location that reuses the image. Confirm the handle, feet and product identity remain clear without stretching the bag. Save the selected file and the section settings that produced the approved display. A later theme change may require another review even if the file stays the same.
Use the Shopify catalog guide for the wider image set and the aspect ratio guide for file preparation. Stop regenerating when the source is correct and the remaining problem is the display box. Give the storefront owner the specific placement and missing boundary instead.

Frequently asked questions
Will a larger file prevent Shopify cropping?
Not necessarily. A larger file can still be fitted into the same mismatched display box.
Can one focal point protect both ends of a tall product?
It protects an area of focus, not a complete set of separated landmarks. Inspect the actual crop.
Does Itemlume fix my Shopify theme?
No. Create and review assets here, then configure and verify the destination through Shopify or an external workflow.
