How do I update WooCommerce product copy without importing the same images again?
Use WooCommerce’s built-in Product CSV Importer and Exporter with a stable product identifier, map only the copy fields that changed, and omit unchanged media fields from the update file. Test one product first, inspect the result, and only then expand the import.
Prepare a controlled update
Start with a non-destructive copy of the CSV workflow or a single existing product that can be inspected after import. Export a sample of the relevant products and use that export to identify the importer’s own schema and the product identity value WooCommerce uses for matching. Do not replace that identity with a title, row number, or newly generated value.
Create an update CSV containing the stable product identity and the copy fields you intend to change, such as the product name or description when those columns are present in the exported schema. Leave unchanged media fields out of the file rather than rebuilding the image list. Keep the original export unchanged so you can compare the source row with the result.
When an Images cell contains multiple image references, the native schema uses a comma-separated list: enclose the complete CSV cell in double quotes so those commas stay inside one field. The first reference is the featured image. For an update to existing products, select Update existing products and confirm the ID or SKU mapping. Leave unchanged media out of copy-only updates.
- Export a sample row and record its stable product identity, current copy, and current media values.
- Make a copy of the CSV and edit only the intended copy values.
- Remove unchanged image or other media columns from the update file; retain the identity column and changed copy columns.
- Open the built-in Product CSV Importer, upload the file, and use its mapping screen to map the identity and copy fields to the corresponding WooCommerce fields.
- Run the import for one product and inspect that product before preparing the wider update.
Use the evidence to choose the next step
After the test import, inspect the product in WooCommerce and compare it with the pre-import export. Confirm that the intended copy changed, the product identity stayed attached to the same product, and the existing media remains present. Also inspect the storefront representation if the copy is customer-facing.
If the copy changed and the existing images remain attached, continue with the remaining rows using the same mapping. If the copy changed but images were removed, stop: review whether an image-related column was accidentally included, whether its value was blank, and whether the file was mapped to a media field. If the importer created a new product or failed to match the intended product, stop and correct the stable identity or update-matching choice before importing more rows.
| Observed result | Next action |
|---|---|
| Copy updated; same product and images remain | Use the verified mapping for the remaining update rows. |
| Copy updated; images changed or disappeared | Stop and inspect media columns, blank values, and field mapping. |
| New product created or wrong product changed | Stop and correct identity matching before another import. |
| Copy did not update | Inspect the mapped field name and the row’s identity value. |
Illustrative exercise
Illustrative exercise: define two assets before comparing outcomes. Asset A is product identity value 7421 with the copy value “Canvas Travel Pouch”; its existing featured image is “pouch-front.jpg”. Asset B is product identity value 7422 with the copy value “Linen Cable Wrap”; its existing featured image is “wrap-front.jpg”. These names, values, and filenames are illustrative.
The update file contains identity 7421 and a changed description for Asset A, plus identity 7422 and a changed description for Asset B. It contains no image column. A pass means both existing products receive their new descriptions, each product keeps its own existing media, and no additional product is created. A fail means either identity is not matched, media changes unexpectedly, or a new product appears; stop before a catalog-wide import.
When media must change
If you intentionally need to change an image, treat that as a separate media update rather than mixing it into a copy-only file. WooCommerce’s importer requires image URLs to be reachable by the importer, and existing images can be referenced. When multiple images are supplied, the first image is the featured image, so preserve the intended order and verify it on the single-product test before proceeding.

Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the image URLs in the CSV if they have not changed?
For a copy-only update, omit unchanged media fields. That reduces the chance of blank or altered media values being interpreted during the import. If media must be included, use reachable image URLs and verify the first-image order on one product.
What is the acceptance condition for the test import?
The intended existing product must receive the new copy, retain its existing media, and remain the same product rather than becoming a duplicate. If any of those conditions fails, do not continue with the catalog update.
