PRODUCT ASSETS / EDITING AND PUBLISHING
Why is my WooCommerce product's first photo repeated in the gallery?
WooCommerce already presents the selected Product image as the first item in the product gallery. If that same file is also assigned in Product gallery, the storefront can show it twice; remove the duplicate gallery assignment while keeping the featured Product image selected.
Identify the two assignments
Open a non-destructive test copy of the affected product, then inspect the product editing screen. Record the file selected in Product image and the files listed in Product gallery. These are separate assignments: Product image supplies the featured image, while Product gallery supplies additional gallery images. The featured Product image is already treated as the first gallery item.
Do not begin by deleting a file from the Media Library. Removing an image from a product assignment is different from deleting the underlying shared media item, which may be used elsewhere.
- Write down the filename or visible thumbnail selected under Product image.
- Compare it with every thumbnail assigned under Product gallery.
- If the same media item appears in both places, remove only that item from Product gallery and leave Product image unchanged.
- Update the test copy, then inspect the published product page in a fresh browser view.
Use the right branch
If the repeated thumbnail exists in both assignments, the duplicate assignment is the first correction to test. If it appears only once in the editor but twice on the storefront, do not keep removing media. Compare the editor's gallery arrangement with the rendered page and record whether the second appearance is a thumbnail, a larger image, or a lightbox or zoom view.
Classic and block galleries can differ in how the gallery is configured and rendered. Also, zoom and lightbox behavior depends on the implementation and theme, so a larger or repeated-looking view may be a presentation behavior rather than a second Product gallery assignment. Check the current WooCommerce and theme context before relying on behavior described for another setup.
| Evidence | Next action | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Same file is in Product image and Product gallery | Remove it from Product gallery only | The featured image remains first and appears once in the normal gallery |
| Same file is assigned once, but storefront still repeats it | Inspect gallery type, theme rendering, zoom, and lightbox behavior | Normal gallery output has one first item; any separate viewer behavior is understood |
| Different files are assigned, but thumbnails look identical | Compare the actual media files and their displayed titles or thumbnails | Only genuinely distinct intended images remain in the gallery |
Illustrative exercise
Define two assets before comparing them: “blue-mug-front.jpg” is the intended featured Product image, and “blue-mug-handle.jpg” is a distinct side-view asset intended for Product gallery. In the faulty test copy, blue-mug-front.jpg is selected under Product image and is also listed first under Product gallery, followed by blue-mug-handle.jpg.
The A comparison is the faulty assignment: Product image = blue-mug-front.jpg; Product gallery = blue-mug-front.jpg, blue-mug-handle.jpg. The B comparison removes only blue-mug-front.jpg from Product gallery: Product image = blue-mug-front.jpg; Product gallery = blue-mug-handle.jpg.
Pass means the storefront's ordinary product gallery shows blue-mug-front.jpg once as the first item and blue-mug-handle.jpg as the next distinct item. Fail means the first asset still appears twice in the ordinary gallery, or the featured image was removed or replaced. This is an illustrative exercise, not a claim that the example was tested.
Confirm the published result
After updating the test copy, inspect the product page at the same viewport and interaction state used to observe the problem. Check the main image and the ordinary gallery thumbnails separately from any zoom or lightbox opened by clicking the image. If the normal gallery passes but the viewer repeats or enlarges the first image, document that distinction before changing theme or gallery settings.
Apply the same assignment correction to the live product only after the test copy meets the acceptance condition. Keep the original media in the Media Library unless you have separately confirmed it is unused and intend to manage that media record.

Frequently asked questions
Should I delete the featured image from the Media Library?
No. First remove the duplicate assignment from Product gallery and keep the Product image selected. Deleting shared Media Library media can affect other products or content.
Why does the image still look repeated after I remove the duplicate gallery entry?
Check whether you are seeing the ordinary gallery twice or a separate zoom or lightbox presentation. Those behaviors depend on the gallery implementation and theme, and classic and block galleries may render differently.
