PRODUCT ASSETS / EDITING AND PUBLISHING

Why doesn't increasing WooCommerce's image width make the product column wider?

WooCommerce image width controls the requested image size; it does not by itself set the CSS width of the product column. Measure the rendered image and column first, then investigate the asset request or the theme layout according to which one is actually constrained.

01 / WHY DOESN'T INCREASING WOOCOMMERCE'S IMAGE WIDTH MAKE THE PRODUCT COLUMN WIDER?

Separate file size from column width

A product image can be requested at a larger pixel width while remaining inside a column whose CSS width has not changed. Conversely, a wide column can display a smaller source image, which may look soft. These are different problems and need different fixes.

A theme that declares product image widths can hide the width controls. If the control is absent, treat that as evidence that the theme may own the sizing decision; do not assume a missing control is broken or that changing a file-size setting will override the layout.

  1. Open a non-destructive test copy of the product page at a fixed viewport size. In the browser inspector, measure the rendered product image and its containing column in CSS pixels.
  2. Inspect the image element's rendered size, selected responsive candidate (for example, currentSrc where available), and the candidate's intrinsic dimensions. Record the viewport and values so the comparison is repeatable.

Use the evidence to choose the next step

If the column itself is narrow, the requested image width is not the controlling limit. Inspect the theme's layout rules or product-page layout settings for that template. Make a small layout change only in the test copy, then measure the column again.

If the column is wide but the displayed asset is small or soft, inspect which responsive candidate the browser selected and whether the requested image size is sufficient for the rendered dimensions. If a confirmed sizing change requires new thumbnail files, regenerate the old thumbnails while retaining the original uploads.

If the expected width control is missing, first establish whether the active theme declares image widths. Avoid editing unrelated CSS until the measured column and theme ownership point to layout as the cause.

  1. Record viewport, column width, rendered image width, selected candidate, and that candidate's intrinsic width.
  2. Branch: narrow column means investigate theme layout; adequately wide column with an undersized candidate means investigate the requested size and responsive candidates; missing width control means verify theme-declared sizing before choosing either change.
  3. Change one relevant variable on the test copy, reload at the same viewport, and repeat the measurements.
03 / WHY DOESN'T INCREASING WOOCOMMERCE'S IMAGE WIDTH MAKE THE PRODUCT COLUMN WIDER?

Illustrative exercise

Illustrative exercise: define Asset A as a fictional product image with intrinsic dimensions 1200 × 1200 pixels, and Asset B as a fictional image with intrinsic dimensions 600 × 600 pixels. These values are illustrative, not WooCommerce defaults. Compare them only after recording the same page's column width and rendered image width for each selected asset.

Pass if the test copy's column reaches the intended layout width and the selected image candidate is large enough for the measured rendering without unexpected softness. Fail if changing the requested image size leaves a narrow column unchanged, or if a wide column still receives a candidate too small for the displayed image. In the first failure, investigate layout; in the second, investigate the requested size and responsive selection.

04 / WHY DOESN'T INCREASING WOOCOMMERCE'S IMAGE WIDTH MAKE THE PRODUCT COLUMN WIDER?

Set an acceptance condition

Keep the change only when the test copy shows the intended column width at the recorded viewport, the image renders within that column, and the selected candidate's intrinsic dimensions are appropriate for its rendered size. Recheck the same product template at another viewport used by your store; responsive layout or candidate selection may differ.

If the column remains unchanged after adjusting the image request, revert that test change and address the theme layout instead. Preserve original uploads when regenerating thumbnails, and compare the resulting page rather than judging from the media file alone.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Why is the WooCommerce image-width control missing?

A theme that declares image widths can hide width controls. Confirm how the active theme handles product image sizing; do not infer that the image asset itself controls the column.

Should I regenerate thumbnails after changing image sizing?

Regenerate old thumbnails after a confirmed sizing change when needed, and retain the original uploads. First verify that the change concerns requested image sizes rather than CSS column layout.
