PRODUCT ASSETS / EDITING AND PUBLISHING

Why did updating my WooCommerce featured photo leave the description image unchanged?

Changing a WooCommerce product’s featured image changes the Product Image assignment, but it does not automatically replace an image already embedded in the description content. Check Product Image, Product Gallery, and the description editor separately, then update the placement that actually contains the unchanged image.

01 / WHY DID UPDATING MY WOOCOMMERCE FEATURED PHOTO LEAVE THE DESCRIPTION IMAGE UNCHANGED?

Identify the Separate Placements

WooCommerce treats the Product Image, Product Gallery, and description content as separate editing areas. The Product Image is the main assigned product photo; gallery entries are additional assigned media; an image inserted inside the description is part of that description content. Therefore, a new featured-photo assignment is not evidence that an embedded description image has changed.

First confirm what the customer is seeing. If the unchanged image appears in the product’s main image area, inspect Product Image. If it appears among thumbnail or gallery media, inspect Product Gallery. If it appears between description text, it belongs to the description editor and must be changed there.

  1. Open a non-destructive test copy of the product, or record the current values before editing.
  2. Note the exact location of the unchanged image on the storefront: main product image, gallery, or description body.
  3. In the product editor, inspect the Product Image field, the Product Gallery field, and the description content independently.
  4. Update only the field corresponding to the storefront location, save the test copy, and reload the product page.

Use Evidence, Not the Label

A media-library filename or a similar-looking thumbnail can make two assets seem interchangeable. Compare the actual selected asset in the relevant field with the image rendered in the description. Useful evidence includes the selected thumbnail, the image visible in the description editor, the image URL or filename shown by that editor, and the storefront position where the image appears.

If Product Image shows the new asset but the description still shows the old asset, the assignments are behaving as separate placements. Do not keep replacing Product Image; move to the description content and replace the embedded image there. If the description editor already shows the new asset but the storefront does not, inspect whether the test copy was saved and whether the page being viewed is the same product and content revision.

Illustrative exercise

Define two distinct assets before comparing them: Asset A is an illustrative file named mug-front-example, showing the front of a mug; Asset B is an illustrative file named mug-detail-example, showing a close-up of the handle. These names and images are fictional test values.

Assign Asset A in Product Image. Insert Asset B inside the description content. Publish or save the test copy, then view the product page. The expected result is Asset A in the main product-image position and Asset B inside the description. Now replace Product Image with Asset B only. A pass for the placement diagnosis is that the main product image changes to Asset B while the description still displays Asset B where it was already embedded. If the description originally contained Asset A, it should remain Asset A until the description content itself is edited.

When the Result Still Looks Wrong

If the relevant field contains the intended asset but the storefront shows another one, verify that the edit was saved to the same product copy being viewed. Reopen the editor and compare the saved field value with the rendered location. If Product Image changed but the description did not, that is expected separation, not proof that the featured-image update failed.

Do not delete unrelated media to test this. Keep the original asset available until the correct placement has been confirmed on the storefront.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Does changing Product Image also replace images inside the description?

No. Product Image and description content are separate editing areas. An image embedded in the description must be replaced in the description editor.

What should I inspect if the old image is only in the gallery?

Inspect Product Gallery rather than the description. Replace the gallery assignment, save the same product copy, and confirm that the gallery position changes while the description remains independently controlled.
