PRODUCT ASSETS / EDITING AND PUBLISHING
How do I test WooCommerce photo switching when shoppers reset their variation choices?
Use a non-destructive copy of the variable product and test a small fixture with two attributes, two variation media assignments, and an intentionally unavailable combination. Record the image, selected values, and availability after loading, selecting, resetting, and choosing an invalid pair; one successful swatch click does not prove the setup works.
Build a minimal fixture
Create or duplicate a test version of one variable product. Use two attribute values that are easy to distinguish, such as Finish: Red and Blue, and Size: Small and Large. Define two variation records: Red/Small with Asset Red, an image showing a red product detail, and Blue/Large with Asset Blue, an image showing a blue product detail. Leave Red/Large unavailable for the fixture. These names and asset descriptions are illustrative; use values that exist in your catalog.
Before comparing any result, write down the product's default values, the parent product media, each variation's assigned image, and which combinations are unavailable. The parent record and variation records have distinct media assignments, so an attractive parent image does not prove that the variation image is assigned correctly.
- Open the test product and inspect the default values used when the page first loads.
- Inspect the variation image assignment for Red/Small and Blue/Large, then confirm the unavailable Red/Large combination is represented as unavailable by the actual storefront controls.
- Open the product page in the same theme and version used for publishing, with a fresh page load.
Run the state sequence
Use the same sequence every time so the evidence is comparable. After each action, record the visible product image, selected attribute values, and whether the purchase control or equivalent availability state changes. Do not infer correctness from the swatch appearance alone.
- Load the page and capture the default image and default attribute values.
- Select Red and Small. Confirm the displayed image is Asset Red and the selected values identify Red/Small.
- Change the selection to Blue and Large. Confirm the displayed image is Asset Blue and the selected values identify Blue/Large.
- Reset the variation choices using the storefront reset control, if present. Confirm whether values and media return to the documented default state.
- Select Red and Large. Confirm the combination is visibly unavailable and does not present the image or purchase state as though a valid variation were selected.
Branch on the evidence
If the selected values are correct but the image is wrong, inspect the variation media assignment first. If the assignment is correct in the record but the storefront still shows the wrong asset, reproduce the test on the actual theme and version and preserve screenshots or recordings for comparison; do not change several variables at once.
If reset leaves stale values, stale media, or a seemingly valid purchase state, repeat the test from a fresh page load. If the defect remains, record the exact prior selection, reset action, resulting values, image, and availability state. If reset returns to the documented default, proceed to the unavailable-combination test rather than treating reset as the only check.
Illustrative exercise
Illustrative exercise: Asset Red is explicitly defined as a red product-detail image assigned to variation Red/Small. Asset Blue is explicitly defined as a blue product-detail image assigned to variation Blue/Large. Red/Large is explicitly defined as unavailable. In the A/B comparison, A is the result after selecting Red/Small and B is the result after selecting Blue/Large. Pass means A shows Asset Red with Red/Small selected, B shows Asset Blue with Blue/Large selected, reset returns to the recorded default state, and Red/Large is unavailable. Fail means either selection keeps the parent image, displays the other variation's asset, leaves stale values after reset, or treats Red/Large as purchasable.
Record an acceptance decision
Accept the product only when all four state groups are documented: default, valid selected variations, reset, and unavailable combinations. Attach the observed values and media to the test record, including the theme and version used for the storefront check. If any state fails, correct or escalate the specific assignment or storefront behavior and rerun the complete sequence, not only the step that previously passed.

Frequently asked questions
Why is one successful swatch click insufficient?
A single click tests only one selected state. It does not show whether the other variation has the correct media, whether reset clears stale choices, or whether an unavailable combination is blocked.
What should I inspect when the image changes but the selection is wrong?
Record the visible attribute values and inspect the variation records and their media assignments. The swatch presentation itself does not establish that the correct variation image is assigned.
