PRODUCT CREATIVE / PRODUCTION AND HANDOFF
Why Does Clicking a WordPress Product Gallery Image Open a File or Attachment Page Instead of a Lightbox?
The core WordPress Gallery block offers different click destinations. A media-file link, an attachment-page link and Enlarge on click are distinct choices. First inspect the actual Gallery link mode; a correctly encoded product photo cannot by itself decide which navigation behavior the page applies.
Specify the viewing interaction you want
A product-detail viewer may need to enlarge a surface close-up without leaving the page. Another gallery may deliberately link elsewhere. Agree on that interaction before diagnosing every new browser tab as an image defect.
Confirm that this is the core Gallery block. A commerce plugin or theme can supply a separate gallery, and its controls need their own documentation. Record the component rather than applying the first lightbox tutorial you find.
Read the link choices as different destinations
The WordPress documentation distinguishes attachment pages, media files, Enlarge on click and no link. Its lightbox option keeps the viewer on the page and supports moving through gallery images. A file destination or attachment page serves a different viewing path.
Inspect the Gallery parent controls when checking gallery-wide behavior. A selected nested image has its own toolbar and can distract you from settings applied to the collection. Identify the actual setting you intend to change before editing.
Do not replace product files or regenerate backgrounds merely because the click destination is wrong. Preserve approved media and test the page behavior using the maintainer’s normal safe workflow. This guide does not activate a plugin or change a site setting.
| Observed click outcome | Object to inspect | Review goal |
|---|---|---|
| Original file opens | Actual media-file link setting | Confirm whether file navigation is intended |
| Attachment page opens | Attachment-page link setting | Confirm destination is appropriate |
| Larger in-page viewer opens | Enlarge on click behavior | Review navigation and return path |
An illustrative exercise: inspecting a woven bag
Illustrative exercise: a fictional product story invites shoppers to inspect a bag’s weave. Clicking the close-up opens an attachment page instead of the intended in-page viewer. The photo itself is correct. No WordPress gallery was edited or tested for this exercise.
The maintainer identifies the core Gallery and its link mode, then evaluates the requested in-page interaction. After any permitted change, the reviewer checks the intended image, movement to another gallery image and return to the original context.
The selected viewer must still present the correct product and useful detail. Enlarging a small or inaccurate source does not verify a weave pattern. If the viewing path works but the underlying detail is wrong, return to the asset evidence as a separate problem.
Approve both the destination and the return path
Inspect the real page after a change instead of relying only on editor controls. Ensure that the click has the intended destination and that users can leave the enlarged view and continue reading or shopping. Accessibility and keyboard behavior require actual component testing; the presence of a lightbox label alone is not that test.
This article gives a documented link-mode distinction and a manual review plan. It does not report a live site operation, keyboard audit, image-quality benchmark or WordPress integration into Itemlume.
Illustrative exercise: gallery click-path record
These are illustrative exercise rows. Save a copy and record your own observations; the example is not an executed acceptance test.
| Fictional asset | Intended interaction | Observed destination | Next review |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bag weave close-up | Enlarge without leaving page | Attachment page | Check actual Gallery link mode |
| Approved second angle | Continue within gallery | In-page viewer | Verify next, previous and return behavior |

Frequently asked questions
Will a higher-resolution export automatically make clicks open a lightbox?
No. File resolution and the page’s click-destination setting are separate. Inspect the actual gallery controls.
Is an attachment page the same as the original image file?
No. The documented link choices separate a WordPress attachment page from a media-file destination and an in-page lightbox.
