DECISION GUIDE / Product images

What should I do when an AI lifestyle scene contradicts the product's permitted use?

An AI lifestyle scene should not show a product being used in an environment its documentation does not permit. Before approving the image, compare the proposed location, temperature conditions, mounting method, and supervision requirements with the actual manual. If the scene contradicts a documented restriction, redesign the setting rather than relying on a small disclaimer.

01 / DECISION GUIDE

Treat the scene as a proposed use condition

A lifestyle image communicates more than atmosphere. Product placement, operating state, surroundings, and nearby people can suggest how the item is intended to be used. A realistic scene cannot establish that the depicted environment is permitted.

Fictional exercise: an indoor lamp appears beside an outdoor swimming pool. The brief identifies it as an indoor product, but no complete manual has been supplied. The pool scene therefore requires review before publication. This is not a tested safety finding.

The decision differs from checking a waterproof claim: the entire operating environment must match documented use restrictions.

02 / DECISION GUIDE

Create a scene-permission card

Read the actual product instructions and record each condition relevant to the proposed scene. Separate confirmed permission, documented restriction, and unknown status. Do not infer acceptable temperatures, installation methods, or supervision arrangements from the product's appearance.

A missing instruction is not permission. Ask the product owner for the applicable document before approving an uncertain use scenario.

Redesign the scene without inventing permission

For the fictional lamp, replace the poolside setup with an indoor room scene consistent with the approved documentation. Keep the product's visible construction unchanged. Do not add a fictional mounting bracket or describe the new setting as universally suitable.

Itemlume can assist with raster scene concepts. Text planning is free after sign-in; image and video generation follow current quoted prices. Generated images do not verify permitted operating conditions.

  1. Identify the product revision and obtain its current instructions.
  2. List the location, environmental conditions, mounting, and supervision implied by the image.
  3. Mark each condition permitted, restricted, or unknown.
  4. Replace conflicting scene elements or request missing evidence.
  5. Review the revised image and caption together.
04 / DECISION GUIDE

Approve the overall impression

A small qualification may not correct a prominent scene that strongly suggests unsupported use. Review the image at its intended display size, including its headline and surrounding copy.

US FTC guidance considers overall advertising impressions and supporting evidence. This is contextual background, not a universal legal rule or a safety certification.

Keep a manual record of the approved environment, source document, reviewer, and final asset. If the manual or product revision changes, reopen the scene decision. Do not publish while a material use restriction remains unresolved.

Record the decision in a manual worksheet

Manual Scene-Permission Review Card

The download contains fictional practice rows. Actual evidence and release decisions are blank for you to fill in. This manual record does not inspect products, update a store or certify compliance. Keep private material out of public copies.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep the outdoor image if I add 'indoor use only'?

Do not assume the caption resolves the contradiction. Redesign the prominent use scenario to match documented restrictions.

What if the manual does not mention the proposed temperature?

Mark the condition unknown and request clarification from the responsible product owner. Do not infer permission.
