DECISION GUIDE / Packaging studio
How do I distinguish artwork, material and application causes of label bubbles?
Do not redesign the label artwork before establishing what is actually bubbling or lifting. Record the container, label material, application method and observation time, then compare controlled samples with the supplier. A smooth render cannot diagnose adhesion, and an isolated defect does not establish that a material batch is faulty.
Locate the defect before naming its cause
Fictional exercise: the same approved artwork is applied to dry bottles using two identified label-material batches. The team plans to observe bubbles and edge lift, but has not completed the comparison. No adhesive failure or batch difference is established.
First distinguish a visible printed shape from a raised label area. Note where the physical defect appears and whether its appearance changes after application. This is a production diagnosis, not another exercise in choosing a tapered label outline.
Keep observations separate from hypotheses
Avery identifies several possible contributors to bubbling, including application, surface and container fit. Its guidance does not establish the cause of this particular sample. Use the actual label and bottle suppliers' instructions when planning handling and preparation.
A clean-looking surface may still need an approved preparation process. Do not prescribe one solvent, puncture the film, or assign a universal waiting time for every material. Record the relevant conditions rather than assuming they were controlled.
| Observation | Possible investigation | Evidence needed | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raised region after application | Application or surface | Matched sample and method record | Cause unresolved |
| Edge lifts later | Material, geometry or handling | Agreed timed observations | Supplier review |
| Only one batch appears affected | Batch or another changed factor | Controlled comparison | No batch claim yet |
Plan a controlled comparison with the supplier
Keep the artwork and container specification unchanged when comparing the two fictional material batches. Record preparation, application operator or equipment, storage conditions and supplier-agreed observation points. If more than one factor changes, document the limitation.
Photograph the same labelled regions and retain the sample identities. Improvement in one specimen is an observation, not proof of a general cure. Itemlume packaging renders do not test adhesion or specify a replacement adhesive formulation.
- Confirm the label and container versions.
- Mark the physical defect location.
- Obtain material-specific preparation and application guidance.
- Change one agreed factor where practical.
- Record matched observations and refer the results to the supplier.
Approve the real combination after review
Let the responsible supplier or production owner decide whether to change artwork placement, material or application. A design change is appropriate only if the evidence supports that route; making the digital label look flatter does not repair the product.
Keep the sample results, remaining unknowns and approved production configuration together. Repeat relevant checks after a bottle or process change. Do not describe these informal observations as certified testing or promise that every future label will remain bubble-free.
Record the decision in a manual worksheet

The download contains fictional practice rows. Actual evidence and release decisions are blank for you to fill in. This manual record does not inspect products, update a store or certify compliance. Keep private material out of public copies.

Frequently asked questions
Should I change the adhesive as soon as one label bubbles?
Not from that observation alone. Establish the actual conditions and have the supplier compare the possible causes.
Can I use the same cleaning method on every bottle and label?
No universal method is prescribed here. Follow the applicable material and container instructions.
