Why did my Canva download include unapproved draft pages after reopening?
Canva does not retain page selections after you close a design, even when other download defaults are saved. Before each release, reopen the download flow, explicitly select the approved pages, and verify the exported file against that selection.
Why the draft pages returned
A saved download preference is not proof that the previous page selection is still active. Canva’s download defaults are local to the device and design type, and page selections are not retained after closing the design. If the selection is left unchecked on a later download, draft pages may be included.
Make a small release fixture
Use a non-destructive copy of the Canva design for a controlled check. In this explicitly illustrative setup, page 1 is an approved product hero labeled “Release hero,” while page 2 is an unapproved draft labeled “Internal draft.” Those labels and page numbers are illustrative; use the actual approved and draft pages in your design.
The comparison is between the intended scope, page 1 only, and a mistaken broader scope, pages 1–2. The expected result is an export containing the release hero and no internal draft. This is a proposed exercise, not a claim that the example was tested.
Repeat the page-scope check at release
- Open the design and start its download flow.
- Inspect the page-selection control and explicitly choose only the pages approved for this release. Do not infer the selection from saved download defaults.
- Complete the download, then inspect the resulting file’s pages or thumbnails and compare them with the approved page list.
- Record the selected page numbers beside the release file so another reviewer can check the scope.
Branch on the export evidence
If the exported file contains only the approved pages, accept it for the intended handoff and retain the page list as release evidence. For the illustrative exercise, page 1 present and page 2 absent is a pass.
If a draft page appears, or the file’s page count or thumbnails do not match the intended selection, do not hand off that file. Return to the design’s download flow, inspect the explicit page selection again, correct it, and create a fresh export. For the exercise, page 2 appearing is a fail even if page 1 is also present.
If the correct pages were selected but the exported file still differs, preserve the file and note the design, device, design type, selected pages, and observed result. Reproduce the check without overwriting the original; the available facts establish that selections reset after closing, but do not establish the cause of every mismatch.
Acceptance condition
Release only when the downloaded file contains every page on the approved list and no page outside it. Recheck this condition each time the design is reopened for a release; a previous session’s selection is not evidence of the current export’s scope.

Frequently asked questions
Do saved download defaults preserve my selected pages?
No. Canva does not retain page selections after the design is closed. Recheck and explicitly select the release pages for each download.
Can I rely on the same download defaults on another device or design?
No. Download defaults are local to the device and design type. Inspect the current download flow rather than assuming another device or design has the same defaults.
