DECISION GUIDE / Product images
Can a feature image combine parts photographed from two product generations?
Do not publish a feature image that combines parts from different product generations unless the depicted configuration actually exists and is supported by product records. A convincing composite can invent a product customers cannot buy. Check each visible component against a real SKU, then either verify the complete configuration or replace the hybrid with clearly labelled version comparisons.
Ask whether the finished product actually exists
A source folder can contain correctly identified photographs from two generations while the finished composite still represents neither. This is a different decision from detecting mixed revisions before generation: the question is whether the completed image depicts a real, purchasable configuration.
Consider a fictional product with a V1 handle and a redesigned V2 latch. An editor combines the attractive V1 handle photograph with the newer V2 latch. Neither SKU contains both components. The resulting image looks plausible but represents an invented configuration.
Do not approve the composite merely because each component came from a genuine photograph. Authentic individual parts do not establish that their combination was manufactured or offered for sale.
Match every visible component to one configuration
Create a component-level record for the finished image. Identify which generation supplied each important feature, then compare the complete arrangement with an actual SKU or documented configuration. Record unknowns rather than assuming that similar-looking components are interchangeable.
A component may be genuine but still belong to the wrong generation. Product appearance alone cannot establish configuration accuracy. The review must distinguish a valid product photograph from a technically polished hybrid.
| Visible feature | Composite source | Fictional product record | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handle | V1 photograph | V1 handle only | Mismatch with V2 |
| Latch | V2 photograph | V2 latch only | Mismatch with V1 |
| Complete assembly | V1 handle + V2 latch | No matching SKU | Reject composite |
| Version comparison | Separate V1 and V2 images | Each version shown independently | Eligible for review |
Replace the hybrid with a labelled comparison
When the mixed configuration does not exist, do not attempt to repair the image by making the joint more convincing. Instead, present V1 and V2 separately, using photographs or carefully reviewed visuals that correspond to each actual generation.
Label each panel with its verified version identifier. Explain only documented differences, such as the handle or latch design. Do not imply that V1 parts can be installed on V2 unless separate compatibility evidence exists.
Itemlume can assist with raster image concepts and layout planning. It does not verify physical assemblies. Text planning is free after sign-in; image and video generation follow current quoted prices. Final image assembly and factual approval require human review.
- Identify every generation-specific feature in the rejected composite.
- Find an approved reference for the complete V1 and V2 products.
- Create separate panels without mixing their physical components.
- Add clear version labels and supported feature descriptions.
- Compare the finished panels with their corresponding product records before release.
Check the purchasing implication before release
A comparison image may accurately show two historical generations while still misleading buyers about what is currently available. Review the final headline, captions, product selection, and destination page together. Distinguish the version being sold from an earlier version used for comparison.
Google's product data specification provides product-feed field guidance, not proof that a photographed configuration physically exists. A matching product identifier in a feed cannot rescue an invented composite.
Maintain a manual release record identifying the rejected hybrid, the approved replacement, the corresponding product versions, and the responsible reviewer. If the seller cannot establish that a depicted configuration exists, withhold the configuration image rather than presenting it as a purchasable product.

Frequently asked questions
Can I combine genuine parts from two generations if the result looks realistic?
Only if reliable product records establish that the complete configuration actually exists and the intended claim is supported. Genuine source photographs alone are insufficient.
Can I show V1 and V2 together in one comparison graphic?
Yes, as separate, clearly labelled versions with documented differences. Do not merge their components or imply unsupported interchangeability.
