DECISION GUIDE / A+ product pages

Can a small customer survey support a percentage claim in product copy?

A survey result of 18 satisfied responses among 20 respondents equals 90% of those respondents, not automatically 90% of all customers. Before using the percentage in product copy, verify the exact question, eligible population, number invited, number responding, qualifying answers, and survey period. If those details are missing, narrow the statement or withhold it.

01 / DECISION GUIDE

Identify what the percentage actually describes

A percentage can be mathematically correct while the advertising sentence is misleading. This decision concerns the survey denominator and the people represented, not whether a general marketing adjective sounds supportable.

Fictional exercise: 20 respondents answered a satisfaction question, and 18 selected the specified positive response. Dividing 18 by 20 gives 90%. This arithmetic describes those 20 respondents only.

The exercise does not specify how customers were selected, how many were invited, or when responses were collected. Therefore, it cannot establish that 90% of all users are satisfied.

02 / DECISION GUIDE

Reconstruct the original survey question

Before writing a claim, locate the actual question and available answer choices. 'Satisfied,' 'very satisfied,' and 'would recommend' are different responses. Do not merge them unless the recorded question and approved calculation justify that grouping.

Record the population invited, eligible responses, numerator, denominator, and time window. Survey methodology and respondent information matter; a sample percentage is not automatically representative.

Select wording that preserves the denominator

If the records confirm the exact question and response counts, a narrowly descriptive statement may report that 18 of 20 respondents selected 'satisfied' in that survey. It should not silently become a statement about every customer.

Do not invent a confidence interval or label a small sample representative without suitable evidence. If invitation records or response eligibility cannot be established, the reviewer should decide whether even the narrow statement has sufficient documentation.

  1. Retrieve the original question and answer choices.
  2. Identify the eligible population and recorded survey period.
  3. Count valid responses and the exact qualifying answers.
  4. Calculate the percentage using the documented denominator.
  5. Compare the proposed wording with the supported population.
  6. Request responsible approval before designing the claim.

Preserve context through design and publication

A qualified sentence can become misleading when a designer enlarges '90%' and removes 'of 20 respondents.' Review the final headline, chart label, caption, and surrounding product claims together.

For US advertising, FTC guidance addresses overall impressions and supporting evidence. This is not a worldwide approval rule. The team's responsible reviewer must evaluate the applicable publication context.

Store the question, response counts, period, proposed wording, and approval decision together. If necessary survey details remain unavailable, omit the percentage rather than presenting the fictional sample as a verified customer result.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Is 18 out of 20 equal to 90%?

Yes, mathematically. It describes 90% of those 20 responses, not necessarily 90% of the entire customer population.

Can I place a large 90% headline above a small sample note?

Review the overall impression. A prominent population-wide implication may remain misleading despite a small qualification.
