DECISION GUIDE / Image remix
How do I distinguish expert involvement from an actual product endorsement?
An expert's involvement in product development does not automatically mean that person evaluated or endorsed the finished product. Before using their name, title, image, or recommendation in advertising, establish the actual relationship, product version, approved statement, and permitted presentation. Separate development participation from independent evaluation and personal endorsement. If endorsement evidence is missing, describe only the documented contribution.
Identify the actual professional relationship
An engineer may advise on one prototype without testing the commercial model. A consultant may review a component without recommending the entire product. Neither activity automatically establishes an endorsement.
Fictional exercise: an engineer reviewed a prototype's handle design. The engineer did not evaluate the final model or express a recommendation. An AI draft stating 'Engineer recommended' therefore introduces an unsupported relationship.
Unlike checking whether a presenter looks like an expert, this review examines what a real contributor actually did and what the advertiser may accurately say about that contribution.
Build a role-and-statement matrix
Ask the project owner for records identifying the contributor, their documented role, the product revision involved, and any statement they actually approved. Keep professional qualifications separate from activity records and endorsement permissions.
Do not infer credentials from a job title, project photograph, or AI-generated biography.
| Relationship | Fictional evidence | Proposed wording | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prototype advice | Handle review recorded | Reviewed a prototype handle | Verify scope |
| Finished-model evaluation | No record | Tested the final model | Reject |
| Product endorsement | No recommendation | Engineer recommended | Reject |
| Professional credentials | Not supplied | Award-winning engineer | Remove |
Write only the supported contribution
A narrow internal draft might say, 'An engineering contributor reviewed an early handle prototype.' Even that sentence requires confirmation of the project record and permission to identify the contributor if identification is intended.
Do not convert 'participated in development' into 'personally uses,' 'tested,' or 'recommends.' If the finished product changed after the contributor's involvement, preserve the relevant version boundary.

- Identify the named person and actual project role.
- Match their work to the relevant prototype or sold revision.
- Separate documented activity from evaluation and recommendation.
- Check approved wording and applicable presentation permissions with the responsible owner.
- Remove unsupported credentials, quotations, and endorsement implications.
Review the complete advertisement
A technically accurate contribution sentence can acquire an endorsement meaning when placed beside a portrait, testimonial-style quotation, or recommendation headline. Review the complete creative, not only its factual paragraph.
US FTC endorsement guidance distinguishes genuine experience and professional recommendations from unsupported presentations. It does not provide automatic permission to reproduce someone's identity or clone their voice.
Keep the role record, approved statement, intended medium, rights-review owner, and final asset together. If the relationship or permission is unresolved, omit the personal endorsement presentation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I say a product is expert-recommended because an engineer helped develop it?
No. Development involvement and a recommendation are different facts. Obtain evidence of an actual recommendation before making that claim.
Can I generate the contributor's voice to read an approved sentence?
Not based solely on permission to mention their contribution. Synthetic voice use requires a separate review of the actual authorization and intended use.
