Why Does My Open Brand Ring Gain a Straight Edge in Inkscape?

Check the Ellipse tool's shape mode. An arc is open and strokes only the curved portion. A chord closes the curve with a straight line between its endpoints, while a segment closes it using two radii. The straight edge may therefore be intentional geometry rather than an export defect.

Distinguish Three Ellipse-Based Shapes

Inkscape's Ellipse tool creates circles and ellipses that can also become arcs, segments, or chords.

An arc remains open. Its stroke follows the curved portion without connecting the endpoints.

A segment combines an arc with two radii leading toward the ellipse center. A chord instead closes the arc by connecting its endpoints with a straight line.

The Switch to chord control selects the chord form. Neither a segment nor a chord should be mistaken for an open arc simply because its curved boundary resembles a ring.

Decision branch: If a decorative brand ring must remain open, inspect arc mode. If the design explicitly requires a straight closing edge, chord mode may be appropriate.

Understand What the Handles Change

The Ellipse tool provides overlapping handles that can be dragged to define the angular extent of the shape.

Dragging the right overlapping handle outside the ellipse produces a segment. Dragging it inside produces an arc.

Holding Ctrl while moving a handle constrains its angular movement to increments of 15 degrees by default. That increment can be changed through preferences.

Shift-clicking a handle restores the complete ellipse.

These controls allow the shape to remain editable. Converting everything to ordinary paths is unnecessary as a first response to an unexpected straight edge.

Diagnose the Edge Without Fill Confusion

A filled shape can make its closing geometry difficult to interpret. An apparently solid region does not necessarily reveal which boundaries are actually stroked.

On a working copy, temporarily remove the fill and inspect the stroke. An open arc should show only the curved stroke, while a chord can reveal its straight endpoint connection.

For a segment, inspect the two radial boundaries rather than assuming its closing geometry is identical to a chord.

Decision branch: If the unwanted line belongs to the shape's geometry, correct the ellipse mode. If the stroke already matches the intended arc, investigate the fill appearance separately.

Illustrative Exercise: Two Brand Graphics

Illustrative exercise — fictional design inputs, not executed Inkscape tests.

Input A is an open decorative ring surrounding a product illustration. Inspect its ellipse mode and stroke, then evaluate an arc without an endpoint connection.

Input B is an approved promotional badge requiring a curved top and straight lower boundary. Evaluate the chord form rather than removing its straight edge automatically.

Decision branch: Preserve the open arc for A and the deliberate chord for B.

Keep the editable ellipse-based shapes in the source artwork. Review their actual boundaries before delivery; neither shape mode automatically converts bitmap artwork into vectors.

This procedure uses the official Shapes tutorial retained on 19 October 2026. It is a documentation-based exercise, not an executed check of the current Inkscape interface.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Why does my curved ring show a straight line between its ends?

It may be in chord mode, which closes the curve with a straight endpoint connection. Inspect the shape mode and stroke before changing the artwork.

Must I convert the ellipse to a path to remove the unwanted line?

No. First use the Ellipse tool's arc, segment, or chord behavior. Keeping the editable shape is appropriate when those controls meet the design requirement.
