How do I clean up jagged paths after tracing an AI logo?

Choose an authoritative concept before tracing

A fictional seller, Pebble Finch, selects a simple bird symbol from generated concepts. A later vector trace contains tiny islands along the wing and a lumpy beak. The first decision is which reference was actually approved: the clean silhouette or incidental texture in the preview. Save that image and identify the wing opening and beak direction that must survive.

Use the best authorized source available without shadows, presentation texture or surrounding scenery. A designer should not trace a photographed tote mockup when the isolated concept exists. Keep the source untouched so you can distinguish source defects from changes introduced by the tracing process.

Compare trace settings instead of chasing point counts

Adobe documents controls for path fitting, corner emphasis and ignored noise areas. Ask the designer to make a small comparison set, changing one relevant control at a time. Record which trial removes unwanted islands and which starts deleting the bird’s intentional opening. Do not treat a setting copied from a different-resolution image as a brand rule.

1. Place the source beside each trace at identical visible size.
2. Compare the outer silhouette and intentional inner gaps.
3. Zoom into the same wing and beak regions on every trial.
4. Label missing features, extra islands and changed corners separately.

Anchor counts are useful diagnostic notes, not a quality score. A lower count can describe a cleaner curve or an oversimplified identity.

Refine only the paths that need correction

Adobe provides manual path simplification. Keep a duplicate before applying it, then compare the changed contour with the approved reference. For the illustrative finch, a rough wing can be smoothed while the deliberate beak corner stays sharp. If cleanup repeatedly damages the defining form, ask for a controlled redraw instead of another global pass.

Check for stray shapes outside the symbol and accidental filled gaps inside it. View the result both as filled artwork and as editable geometry in the external editor. Keep an annotated rejection reason when a cleaner-looking version becomes a different bird. That record prevents the next designer from repeating an already rejected simplification.

Approve a vector proof, not an extension

Test the refined master at its intended small application and a larger plain presentation. Confirm the name, silhouette and openings remain recognizable. Keep the source, trace trials, refined master and proof as separate files. The outcome is a reviewed vector asset with an explanation of the changes, not a claim that automatic tracing guarantees production readiness.
