Why Does Inkscape Interpolation Produce Nothing or Twisted Paths?

First distinguish two failures. If Interpolate Between Paths produces nothing, confirm that the selected objects are paths. If it generates twisted shapes, inspect the paths' starting nodes and compare the interpolation methods. These problems have different causes.

01 / WHY DOES INKSCAPE INTERPOLATION PRODUCE NOTHING OR TWISTED PATHS?

Check Object Type Before Interpolating

Inkscape provides Interpolate Between Paths under Extensions → Generate From Path. The extension generates intermediate paths between selected endpoint paths.

The input objects must be paths. If a selected shape has not been converted, use Path → Object to Path (Ctrl+Shift+C) before running the extension.

Do not assume this command converts an ordinary bitmap logo into vector paths. The documented conversion step concerns eligible objects that can become paths, not automatic bitmap tracing.

Decision branch: If the extension produces no result, inspect object type and selection first. If intermediate shapes appear but look distorted, investigate node correspondence instead of repeating the same conversion.

02 / WHY DOES INKSCAPE INTERPOLATION PRODUCE NOTHING OR TWISTED PATHS?

Understand Starting Nodes and Shape Twisting

Interpolation establishes relationships between points along the endpoint paths. The position of each path's starting node influences how those relationships are constructed.

Two visually similar outlines can therefore interpolate unexpectedly when their starting nodes occupy different relative positions. The resulting intermediate shapes may appear to twist or travel through an unintended configuration.

Use the Node tool and press Tab to identify the first node while inspecting the path. Compare the starting-node positions of both endpoint paths before evaluating the generated sequence.

This is particularly important for decorative logo-inspired outlines where a smooth transition is desired. A recognizable first and last shape does not guarantee visually appropriate intermediate geometry.

Compare the Documented Methods on Working Copies

The Interpolation Method choices in the official tutorial are Split paths into segments of equal lengths and Discard extra nodes of longer path. Their curve calculations differ. Record the exact label your installed version shows; a different label or missing extension needs verification rather than an assumed equivalent.

Keep the same eligible endpoint paths and selection order on two working copies. Record their object identities and starting-node positions before selecting a different method on each copy. Compare the actual intermediate outlines, not just the recognizable endpoints. This is a proposed comparison, not an executed Inkscape result.

Neither method guarantees removal of twisting. If the problem is instead uneven spacing after the path geometry is acceptable, inspect the exponent and selection order as a separate parameter question.

Check the two method labels and starting-node instructions in the official Interpolate tutorial.

For spacing rather than path eligibility or twisting, continue with the exponent and selection-order guide.

Keep the Actual Input and Result Record

Use the blank record below for the actual document and the two working copies. A no-output case first needs path-eligibility and selection checks. A twisted-output case needs starting-node and method observations. Record unresolved geometry instead of filling in an expected success.

Do not convert the approved master while investigating. Intermediate decorative outlines still need design review; this workflow does not automatically approve a brand logo or create a video animation. No software execution is claimed here.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Why does Interpolate Between Paths fail with my original logo object?

The extension requires path inputs. Convert eligible vector objects using Object to Path first. That command is not a substitute for bitmap vectorization.

Will choosing the equal-length-segment method always eliminate twisting?

No. The two documented methods handle node correspondence differently. Starting-node positions and endpoint geometry also matter, so compare results before selecting an approach.
