How to reconcile separate front and back packaging artwork concepts
Approve separate packaging faces as a related pair. Keep one factual copy record, identify which output belongs to each face and check the orientation on an assembled concept. Matching colors are not enough: the same brand, product edition and information roles must survive the move into a production layout.
Start with one package record and two face roles
Imagine an illustrative loose-leaf tea carton for a brand called Fern Ledger. The front carries the name and a simple leaf motif; the back carries the merchant’s approved preparation text. Separate artwork requests can explore each face well, but they can also produce different tea names, incompatible motifs or a back that repeats front promotional copy instead of its assigned information.
Create a compact face record before generating: structure, dimensions, brand, exact product edition, front message and back text. Give every approved phrase a destination. A second artwork candidate should inherit those facts, not become an opportunity to invent another product story. Leave unsupported facts absent rather than filling an otherwise sparse back with convincing ingredients or certification-like details.
Generate each face with its correct assignment
In Packaging studio, keep the factual brief and structure choices consistent. Use AI Flat packaging artwork for the intended Front or Back face. Review the first candidate before generating its counterpart, but preserve the approved copy record independently. If you change the tea edition or wording, identify which face needs a new candidate rather than comparing outputs from different briefs.
The face image is a straight-on raster concept. It does not become editable typography because the letters look sharp, and it is not the supplier’s production layout. Use the deliverable distinction guide to keep those stages clear. Here the central check is whether the separately produced images describe one real package consistently.
Reconcile facts before reconciling decoration
| Relationship | Check across the two faces | Useful decision |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Same brand and exact product edition | Reject or replace the mismatched face |
| Copy assignment | Front and back retain their intended messages | Restore the approved face record |
| Orientation | Both read correctly on the intended assembled pack | Correct placement in the external layout |
| Graphic family | Motif and emphasis belong to one system | Choose a coordinated candidate or refine externally |
For Fern Ledger, compare the product name letter by letter before deciding whether the two leaf illustrations feel related. A coherent palette cannot repair an incorrect blend name on the back. Likewise, a correct name does not excuse a repeated headline that displaced the preparation information. Mark a factual mismatch as a hold point instead of calling it a minor design inconsistency.
Then decide how much graphic continuity is useful. A motif can continue conceptually without crossing a panel seam literally. If the concept depends on one line meeting another across an edge, retain that intent for the production designer rather than assuming two raster outputs align exactly. Esko describes packaging artwork positioning checks. This article’s pair-review worksheet remains an independent merchant method.
Check face orientation in the structural context
Use the print-face concept preview to identify where Front and Back belong, then inspect a physical paper mockup or supplier sample when orientation matters. Follow the ordinary way the customer turns and opens the package. Avoid flipping a face image simply to make its composition match another screen view; that can reverse lettering or change the intended reading direction.
Only the folding-carton concept provides a complete unfolded concept net. Other supported structures use printable-face concepts, and the tube has a curved wrap to consider. Those previews can clarify assignments, but they do not prove production registration or construction tolerances. Refer to the panel hierarchy guide when the back is being asked to perform the front’s identification job.
Hand off the reconciled pair with remaining decisions visible
Give the production designer the two approved concept images, exact editable copy record, structure specification and a simple face map. For Fern Ledger, note which leaf relationship is essential and which is merely a visual suggestion. Ask the designer to rebuild the approved graphics on the supplier’s current template rather than trying to extract technical alignment from photographed or generated perspective.
Review the combined production artwork and assembled proof again. A replacement back face may be factually correct yet belong to an older front approval. Keep both filenames and the pair’s edition in the external record. Approval of the pair means its identity and roles are coherent; it does not establish print-ready vectors, automated registration or authorization to manufacture without the supplier’s separate checks.

Frequently asked questions
Do Front and Back requests automatically produce a registered pair?
No. They are separate raster artwork concepts. Compare their facts, face roles, orientation and graphic relationship, then develop the combined production layout externally.
Should the same motif cross every panel edge?
Only when that relationship is useful and can be checked in the production workflow. Conceptual consistency can be preferable to a seam-dependent graphic that the separate images do not align reliably.
Can a correct back face be paired with any approved front?
Check the exact product edition and copy record. A previously approved front may belong to another variant or revision, even when its palette matches.
