Packaging studio / FIELD GUIDE
Which batch numbers and dates should appear in a packaging mockup?
Treat batch codes and dates as variable production information, not decorative copy. A concept may reserve their location, but the final values must come from the authorized product and production records. Keep placeholders unmistakable in the handoff.
Separate fixed artwork from production data
For an illustrative retail carton, the brand name and product description may belong to the fixed artwork while a batch code changes between production runs. Record which team supplies each variable field and how it will be applied. Do not ask the generator to invent a plausible expiry date to make the mockup feel realistic.
A placeholder that looks like a genuine date can survive into a public image or a printing proof. Use clearly identified sample data in concepts and inspect every view, including side panels that are easy to miss.
Create a variable-field register
| Field | Concept treatment | Final owner |
|---|---|---|
| Batch identifier | Clearly marked sample field | Production team |
| Date | Reserved position, no invented promise | Authorized product owner |
| Serial code | Illustrative placeholder | Approved system |
| Fixed product name | Verified artwork | Brand team |

Review the printing method separately
Ask the supplier how the variable information is applied and what space it needs. A generated mockup does not establish printer compatibility, legibility or resistance to handling. Preserve the approved technical requirements in the production artwork handoff.
Approve concepts and final files differently
Mark concept exports as samples where necessary and avoid publishing fictional production codes as actual pack evidence. Before printing, reconcile the variable-field register with the approved final process. Use panel reconciliation and sample approval for the broader release.
A placeholder caught at proofing
A fictional carton concept contains a realistic-looking sample date on its side panel. During supplier proof review, flag that field as a placeholder and ask the authorized production owner for the actual coding process. Inspect the front, back and side exports so the sample is not accidentally presented as real product information in marketing. Preserve the fixed artwork separately from changing data. The useful handoff identifies the field, owner and production treatment without inventing expiry rules or assuming that a generated raster code can be printed operationally.
